Why no guidance for staff regarding Boris' un-enforced booze ban? i.e. strictly enforce it or turn a blind eye to avoid confrontation. Of course LU can't 'relax' the rule as it they put it into the by-laws as opposed to conditions of carriage.
In fact this 'ban' is so ignored on normal nights it would be laughable if it wasn't for the fact that it now just gives the impression of an unpoliced. unsupervised, system where you can behave however you want without fear of being challenged (except if taking enthusiast photos of course but that's another thread...).
I wonder how many bottles of 'orange juice' are laced with gin or vodka, but then why resort to subterfuge when you can swig openly from a can?
Great of Boris to create a problem where none existed before.
(Incidentally people drink openly from bottles on the Berlin U-Bahn and they don't seem to have any issues resulting. Maybe the 24-hr weekend services encourage a slower rate of imbibing in pubs and clubs?)

I was under the impression that the drinking from an open container ban was only enforceable by the BTP/Met; assuming that to be the case, your criticism of your colleagues is a little unfair (even more so when you take into account the cuts in station staff)!
Have you actually worked a new years eve on the front line recently? I said after the last two I'd never do it again, and I won't be going back on that any time soon!

Have you actually worked a new years eve on the front line recently? I said after the last two I'd never do it again, and I won't be going back on that any time soon! A) I saw guidelines on the intranet on 31/12, hardly accessible to T/Ops or SAs B) Instructions were make PA announcement if persons were seen drinking or holding open containers C) I haven't worked on NYE for many years front-line, though *have* volunteered to do behind scenes for last four years (love to do front line but the stupid 'licence' system prevents covering even SA depite 30 years' operating experience). D) I went to work in uniform and was glad to blag a cab ride. Even at 2130 the cars were packed with 20-somethings all busily drinking away (and no problem, but then why ban drinking in the first place?). E) Police complained to LU Gold Control that staff at a certain Zone 1 station were not enforcing the alcohol ban on the gateline. To come in where I started, uneforcable laws are bad laws.

Fair enough replies, but one question remains as I'm still wondering if my belief is correct - is the drinking from an open container ban actually enforceable by LU staff, or is it solely down to the police?
I've always thought it was the latter only.

If in the by-laws (still LRT by-laws I think) then an "official", or whatever the correct definition is, of the company has the power to "eject" with minimum force is any said person who does not "quit or desist" when ordered. Of course the wisdom of attempting such action these days is another matter.
