Hello all I really couldn't think of a better place to come to have this question answered. AIUI the District Railway used to be known as the "Fish and Parcels" - I've tried to find mention of it in "Going Green" by Piers Connor but, unless my eyes are deceiving me, it's not there. Can anyone here enlighten me as to the reasons behind the sobriquet? THC

I think it has something to do with the DR services between Ealing and Windsor.

I thought it was called that because freight used to use it.

I would have thought that the connection would be with the East End of the DR, as fish would have come from the LTS, and along the eastern stretch into London. Q8 has mentioned NR services stopping at LU stations on this route, I'll post the link when I can remember it. I think it may have had something to do with parcels. Here it is, Q8 and SB discuss it near the bottom of page one. districtdave.proboards39.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=1136377939&page=1

There was a thread discussing the very subject of 'fish & parcels' - but I have a feeling it got lost when DD accidently deleted the District line board ;D ;D ;D

It was my thread, where I made the same suggestion I did above. I'm almost certain that the nickname is related in some way to the short-lived SemiCrossrail services between Windsor and Ealing Broadway, thence onto the rest of the DR system.

Wasn't Fish and Parcels related to the fact that the LT&SR freight trains used to hold up the DR service where the tracks joined?
Somewhere like East Ham or Barking where 2 sets of double track converged into a single set of double track. As the LT&S trains took preccidence over the DR service in the early hours...

From Tubeprunes Site: Fish & Parcels - Old slang name for the District Line, since it runs over main line routes and was regularly alleged to be subject to delays from other railways. In the days when it shared the two tracks between Bow Road and Upminster with the London, Tilbury and Southend route, District trains were regularly delayed by freight trains.
There we are, i knew i was close. lol.
