Hi, is the Uxbridge branch of the Metropolitan line relatively safe to travel on in the evening or is it like the District line east of Barking?

When I was at uni it always seemed okay, certainly no worse than the N207. It's quite gentile really even when i managed to sit next to the dodgyest people i never got bothered..

It is as good as it gets and is certainly not a 'no go area'. There may be a few problems from time to time, especiallyt on a Friday or Saturday evening, but nothing untoward as far as I am aware.
If you need to make the journey and you are unsure, why not travel in the leading car where the Train Operator is close at hand?

I'm always pleased to empty a Last Train without incident and get the hell out.

I'd say the locals in Uxbridge are more of a concern than the passengers on the train. A number of people i know were affected at some point, mainly for being students. The locals don't seem to be too keen on the university probably because a large percentage go home at weekends and the general demographic of the university prevent a "normal" student town feel, go to Norwich, Exeter, Bristol to see what i mean. But also some of the feeling comes from the fact that the university seemed to bulldoze it's interests throught any local objection. I doubt however that there would be the prolifereation of high tech and white collar jobs in the area that there are now if it were not for the university......

I live in Devon and was looking for a good place to stay overnight in Greater London between two trains journeys. Central London would have been out of the question due to price so I thought somewhere around Uxbridge may have been an idea but from reading some of the comments maybe not then.

I would say the District line is actually far better than it was given the CCTV now in use in every carraige.....
As for a good part of London at night.........errmmm......

I don't think the District east of Barking is that bad - they have done a lot to improve it i.e. playing classical music in some of the stations and as Colin says, by the provision of CCTV on the refurbed D stock.
Travelling at night on the tube is nowhere near as scary as a few years ago. The trains are more frequent and busier, the outdoor stations are better lit, more CCTV etc.

Uxbridge branch is very safe in the evenings, you get the odd group of kids but they keep themselves to themselves. Uxbridge is very busy almost every night because of the amount of clubs and bars which close late. There are always Police patroling on Friday and Saturday nights in and around the station and up the High street. As reganorak has said, travel in the leading car with the driver if you have any doubts.

The times I felt most unsafe on the Underground was working nights at places like Dagenham East. One saturday night shift at Ladbroke Grove was also a little hairy and even though I was standing next to 10 P-way guys. Then there was the time the locals were fighting each other at Harrow on Hill bus station.

I'm from Ruislip, its safe, I wouldn't worry atall tbh. The demograph of the area is interesting, as its predominantly blue collar at Rayners Lane and Uxbridge, but white collar in the middle. Which specific station are you using, may I ask? A somewhat tounge-in-cheek description here web.archive.org/web/20080214034321rn_2/www.quinparker.com/zone6/Pity the original is down.

Which specific station are you using, may I ask? It would be Uxbridge or Hillingdon. If I understand it correctly the only station other than Uxbridge there are likely to be issues at is Eastcote.

Having used both Hillingdon and Uxbridge late at night before, and even been around both after last train, I would personally prefer to be at Uxb, because Hillingdon is too devoid of people and buildings by the station.

I note there is a travelodge just over the road from Uxbridge station, I am just not sure how safe that walk accross there would be in the evening or if it would be like Romford station is.

Ahh, if its the building I'm thinking of then its the other side of the bus station. Very well lit, cameras all over the place, staff near by, and its not really on the way to anywhere so people don't tend to loiter once the buses have finished and pubs chucked out. Might get a few drunks waiting for taxis, thats about it. I would say its far better than Romford, but my experiance of that is limited. Hope this helps!

The Travelodge is a brand new building, just been built. To the left of the Travelodge (over the road) is a very busy pub, but with security on the door.

If I understand it correctly the only station other than Uxbridge there are likely to be issues at as Eastcote. You do get a few kids hanging around at Eastcote, but by the time the last trains are coming in and the last Route No. 282 buses are due, they're more or less gone. Eastcote is dead to the world on most nights (unlike Ruislip High Street, when Sweeney's is open on a late night, or Ruislip Manor, which has a Wetherspoons right outside the station). Leading car will usually be quite busy from the evening peak up 'til the night (around 9ish) as you get a lot of Canary Wharf commuters living round Eastcote and the surround parts of Ruislip. A lot of Ruislip and Ickenham are still a bit 'neighbourhood watch' like, so you don't get much trouble in those residential areas. Not sure about Hillingdon. And as for Uxbridge... pi$$ed up and rowdy students comes to mind (but you get that at Northwick Park as well, what with the University of Westminster's accommodation, so anywhere between Finchley Road and Uxbridge/Northwood has students in their drones).

Uxbridge is perfectly safe to stay in. I used to live in the area and never had a single problem. Hillingdon was my local tube station actually and it's fine as well. Hillingdon isn't much, really, and when you come out of the station it'll feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. There's a strip of shops a bit further south and then you've got endless housing... and that's about all, really.
I've never had a single problem anywhere in London in two and a half years of living here.

In my experience, avoid London at all costs on: October 31st, November 5th, December 24th and December 31st/January 1st
