Waiting for an eastbound Central Line train at Liverpool Street in the rush hour this evening, it seemed like every train was going somewhere different when it arrived than what the DMI was advertising when it first appeared
Hainault via Newbury Park -> Newbury Park Hainault via Newbury Park -> Epping -> Hainault via Newbury Park Epping -> Hainault via Newbury Park Woodford via Hainault -> Epping -> Woodford via Hainault -> Debden Epping -> Hainault via Newbury Park -> ??
What was going on?

[pedant] it's = it is its = belonging to it Very simple: do try to get it right [/pedant]

Title of initial post corrected per not-so-subtle request. My education was lacking on formal grammar, but I do normally know the difference between "it's" and "its".

A lot of Central line trains I've been on have changed destination while I've been on them, I remember one being for West Ruislip, then Ruislip Gardens, then North Acton Must just be for operational reasons, don't know why the DMIs wouldn't be corrected though.

There is I gather a Society for the Errant Apostrophe!
It's = it is; it shall Its = belonging to it
St James' Park is I gather more correct than St James's Park as the object or person that it belongs to has an S at the end.
Then we have an apostophre after an S if it is plural except if the word is already a plural:
Motorman's train Motormen's trains not Motormens' trains as 'men' is in the plural
That sort of thing! I have to correct these all day long some times in my editing job!

Motorman's train Motormen's trains not Motormens' trains as 'men' is in the plural Yes but, depending on the context you can also have:- The motorman's trains The motormen's train The motorman trains The motormen train Motorman Train Motorman Train trains Motorman Train trains motormen A motorman trains Motorman Train Motormen train Motorman Train A motorman de-trains Motorman Train's train Oh no! This could go on all night.

I had a situation on the Central Line where the DMIs both on and off the train were saying different things, ended up with mass confusion on the train and passengers going up to the cab at East Acton and trying to confirm the destination with the driver who didn't seem to be 100% sure either.

If the Grey matter allows, I will try to answer the original question.
The display on the stations originates from the TT at Wood Lane which is loaded at about 0300.
Changes to destinations can be made by the SigOp at Wood Lane simply by selecting a Train No. then a list of destinations, just because the Station display might say Woodford doesn't mean that's what ARS is going to select, that would take another edit to alter the actual route.
If the SigOp cocks up an edit you can lose ALL the next train information, DMT's get up to the next 20 to arrive say at LES but this can be wiped out simply by a bad edit.
The destination on the Train and what's displayed on the Station have no common link, the T/Op selects what's to be displayed hence the different destinations.
It is also possible to display a WB destination on an EB platform simply by the edit process, I know it can be done as I've done it, not intentionally of course.
Hope this helps.

Please be careful folks - some people can take offence to the sort of statements that get placed on these forums on grammer correction etc - just remember, we are after all human and can make mistakes. Regardless of our up bringing it is not fair to make such asumptions based mearly on the fact there may be a typo or general spelling mistake. And rememeber - you annoying somebody may lead them to not respond to another more important question they may have information or an answer on!!!
And besides, if me spell decker on me worm producer packs up it aint necessarily my fault!!!

My colleague has just e mailed using the word 'their' instead of 'there'. And I work for a publishing house! Because I am a professional proof-reader. and editor, I spot tryopoguphicol errers all the time. I am also a Mod on a forum which is based in the US. Much as I am sorely tempted at times, I would never dream of picking up someone else's grammar or spelling. They may be 6' 10" tall and eat hockey sticks for breakfast!!! And know where I live!!!!

yes, some people would resort to smacking the living daylights out of someone for making what could be taken as a jibe about ones interlect, then again you don't have to be 6'10" and built like a brick poo house to exact revenge.
What, IMHO people should think of when writing these things is how the recipient is going to take it and what there reaction will be, who cares if it's right or wrong afterall the eye/brain will read it just as it sees it...........

Sorry for being perhaps off-topic, and apologies for my insufficient knowledge of English, but what is a tryopoguphicol errer ? Did you mean what would be (in French) "erreur typographique", which I would have translated as "typographical error"? Or am I totally wrong? Thank you in advance for your help!

Lol, that's exactly what he means, but he's intentionally made it into a typographical error itself ;D

From what I've read on here, the long haired chap Chris M is a frequent and enthusiastic contributor to this forum. I really couldn't give a Flying Fairlop about his spelling, much less his grammar. His contributions are excellent, informative and don't need correcting for minutiae. You carry on Chris and damn the pedants!!! ;D
