This is an interesting little anomaly The view shown is taken from within a 15mph speed limit. You are approaching a red circled Network Rail 40 mph limit, which only applies when the whole of the train has passed the 40 mph sign, the preceding 15 mph continues to apply until then. Also in view, however, is a black circled LUL 35mph limit, which applies when the FRONT of the train passes the sign. The black circled LUL sign is not a train length from the red circled NR sign. One might be tempted to suggest the 15mph applies until the 35mph sign is reached, that speed limit applying until the whole train is past the 40mph limit sign when that speed limit applies. ;D However I rather doubt that is the intention !!! hehe!

I love your logic: what else could it possibly mean? But why the 40 anyway?? (Surely they're not BOTH permanent are they?)

The 40 was there first! And a few days ago, after the 35 appeared, the 40 had been taken down and was lying in the grass - but now it's been resurrected! This is at least the fifth cock up that has been made in the introduction of the new speed limit signs. How hard can it be?
And no, I don't know what it means either.

Around Stonebridge Park, there used to be two signs which said
Cl. 313 40mph [white with red border]
LU 30mph [red with white border]
In both cases, the numerals were black
I think I saw this around 1997, or maybe 1998. Think it's gone now. There also used to be one around Queens Park n/b.
also, ISTR, a '15' restriction around Clapham South, followed immediately [well, about 2 cars length] by a 'T'. But just around 3 cars before the 15, there was a 35.

That sounds like the differential speed limits on the LSWR diversionary route between Wimbledon and East Putney - it's 30/45, 30 for NR stock and 45 for LU stock.

Ahh - but who spotted the even more amazing cock up with the 35 PSR? Tha fact that it started off being posted on the embankment on the Westbound, but facing eastbound - so if a train was coming from the other direction, you couldn't see it Yes, that was particularly impressive. But this is presumably done by the people who brought us two identical speed limit signs about 3 yards apart between Bromley and West Ham last year!

And indeed the speed restriction between Upminster Bridge and Hornchurch W/B, where the 45mph restriction is reduced to 40mph for less than a trains length - even though a train can't get up to 45 by the time it reaches the signs even with BOTH flags up (err.... - or so I've been told ;D)
