I need to travel home late this Friday evening, so checked the times of the last Metropolitan services to Amersham. It would appear the last train is a through service to Chesham leaving Baker Street at 12:25
Is there any reason, operational or otherwise, why the last service is a through train to Chesham? I am just curious since apart from peak hours, the Chesham service is a shuttle and so I wondered why the last was a through service

There is indeed a reason - the 4 car shuttle has to get back to Neasden!
To facilitate that, the last train from Baker Street covers the final trip up to Chesham then stables overnight at Rickmansworth.

Possibly because if the shuttle stabled at Rickmansworth it wouldn't ever get back to the depot

The last trains also run on the local line between Harrow and Moor Park!
I've never seen the Chesham shuttle run to Neasden except on a Sunday night-in service! Anyone got timetable details?

No use stabling at Rickmansworth as all 9 sets stabling are 8 cars for the moprning service and it would need eiher an extra 4 car to balance in the evening or an 8 car working from Neasden to balance in the morning if the 4 car started from Rickmansworth.
Train 407 last runs are as follows: Mon - Sat 0037 Chesham - Rickmansworth and ety to Neasden depot Sun 0007 Chesham - Wembley Park and ety to Neasden depot

In the 70's there were 2 direct trains ex Chesham AM & 2 direct trains to Chesham PM Mon-Fri, weekends and off peak all Chesham services were shuttles including last trains.Taking the shuttle to & from Neasden was a Ricky night turn.

Tell you what, this weekend, we'll stable not 1, but 2 Chesham shuttle type trains at Ricky. (The fact that we're doing it due to engineering work over the weekend which spilts the Met is merely co-incidence ;D )

and the spare 4 car set is cover for the Chesham shuttle I imagine. Just as well as there is no access from Northwood to Wembley Park from end of traffic on Friday to start of traffic on Monday. So 407 starts and finishes at Rickmansworth for the two days and a spare covers all events.

Can someone clarify something with me: I need to use the first train of the day out of Chesham on a weekday, where does that go?

According to TfL's journey planner (I've mislaid my copy of the Met WTT), there is a 0519 to Watford then a 0558 to Baker Street.
