At East Putney tonight, and not for the first time, trains on the Wimbledon branch heading towards Earl's Court were described on the platform indicators as 'City via Victoria'.
Why do they say this rather than the train's destination, which was, I think, Tower Hill?

As it is NR track and signalling, it uses the NR Trust system I think. Anyway this means that the trains have to be loaded on that system, and if trains are out of sync at Wimbledon as they arrive the platform attendant there can use a computer to load a new destination on the Trust system, which will follow the train down until it leaves NR railway.
For simplicity, it can only show a limited number of destinations. I think they are : Not in service, Parsons Green, Earls Court, High St Ken, Edgware Road, and City via Victoria.
In a way, showing City Via Victoria is better than showing a fake destination. I.E. if Trains were terminating at Embankment, City Via Victoria, is more accurate than the fake destination it would get if coming from Ealing !

PS When the train arrives at Putney Bridge the destination on the dot-matrix then changes from the info from Trust to LUL's TD (train description), which will be Tower Hill, Dagenham East etc,etc.. However, it is worth noting that Fulham Bdy gets its info from Trust (I think), so when the train arrives at Putney Bridge it will change to LULs TD (i.e. Tower Hill), this will be the same at PG, but when the train gets to Fulham it will still show 'City Via Victoria' , and then back to 'Tower Hill' at West Brompton! Confusing I know ...
At least the Wimbledon folk can change the trains destination if it is not right, but on the Richmond branch if the train is not as described it will just go with the wrong description until Turnham Grn. Even if the train has been cancelled, it will still show as on time at Gunnersbury until about 3 minutes after it is due then it will just disappear (great customer service)! I think this is because the LC's or Signallers who cancel the train don't bother telling the NR dept to update this on the system, so it is not sent down to the destination boards.

It was the old WARS system in use to initiate TDs at Wimbledon, not sure if it is any more though.

It still uses WARS one of the reasons trains carry Mansion House TDs is because they are put up as a C*** (for instance) C standing for city then the train number so for example a 32 to mansion would go as c032 or 72 to edgeware would go as e072 etc.
As mansion is the first place after the city it could terminate it gets that TD if it comes down out of turn. Its all quite complicated but when it works (imo) its better than the other options.

ABCD, C or CD? C for Tower Hill; CD for Edgware Road; ABCD for Mansion House.

ABCD, C or CD? C for Tower Hill; CD for Edgware Road; ABCD for Mansion House. I think you are getting the TD Code confused with the Destination on WARS. Ie an C101 or E072 for an Edgware Rd train.

Train numbering is done as below, with the first digit being used for the destination, "I" = LUL train, followed by its LUL train number: train no 162 with BR code 7I62 given td = Edgware Rd train no 121 with BR code 6I21 given td = Cen. London train no 077 with BR code 2I77 given td = Edgware Rd train no 013 with BR code 1I13 given td = Cen. London train no 012 with BR code 1I12 given td = Cen. London train no 073 with BR code 2I73 given td = Edgware Rd train no 022 with BR code 1I22 given td = Cen. London train no 074 with BR code 2I74 given td = Edgware Rd train no 120 with BR code 6I20 given td = Cen. London train no 075 with BR code 2I75 given td = Edgware Rd train no 162 with BR code 7I62 given td = Edgware Rd train no 071 with BR code 3I71 given td = High St Ken train no 121 with BR code 9I21 given td = Earls Court train no 051 with BR code 4I51 given td = Earls Court train no 012 with BR code 3I12 given td = High St Ken train no 073 with BR code 4I73 given td = Earls Court train no 162 with BR code 9I62 given td = Earls Court train no 001 with BR code 3I01 given td = High St Ken

Channelling Colin (I *knew* I'd seen this on here somewhere): More detail on the interfacing between the Wimbo branch and elsewhere.
