The title says it all really!! ;D
I noticed that there is a new camera shaped like a football with a tiny lens in it, which seems to be pointing at the train number. Anyone know what purpose this serves and why they had to use this particularly strange looking camera for the job? Is it another attempt at automatic number recognition to assist the ECT signallers?

Nah they'ed need a a megaphone, binoculars and a translator [to make sure they understand what Baker Street is saying to them] before they even get an idea as to what trains is where?

I'd rather like to know what that camera is too ! Evil looking thing ...straight from a star wars film !! Since it seems to be trained on the train number and cab, I'd certainly like to know who's looking at the other end ! However there is also one on the eastbound platform, that seems not to look at the train front at all !

I'm on Annual leave, so haven't yet seen these. I know Metronet are planning speed checking in tunnels, so possibly these are on test for this.

This is what the camera in question on the Eastbound looks like. As Aspect says, it looks like something out of Star Wars

It looks like it can move left and right and up and down, so I assume it is just a new security camera which looks like it's been nicked from the Big Brother house ;D

Whilst doing 'locals' today, we'd noticed that a similar camera has appeared at Hotting Hill Gate (Inner).
We later had John Harris (well known DMT from ECT) in the cab who told us that it's to assist in doing reforms etc - it's only aimed at numbers, not cabs as such.
From what John was saying it simply replays to a CCTV screen which will be installed (or it'll be tapped into an existing one maybe) at ECT.
I see the Star Wars analogy though..... How long until they get a Darth Maul (sp?) colour scheme!

It looks like a Storm Trooper. ;D I wonder if it has a built in laser gun, It'd certainly help T/ops who are having problems with punters holding the doors open to get them out by shooting at ‘em.

I've seen those types of cameras before, they're everywhere around this building: Can't think why though ;D ;D

You should read the thread about sensitive information. But as you've let the cat out the bag, it's all part of the Connect project. Us Service Controllers won't have any trouble getting hold of drivers once this is installed.

Do we have a date for Connect going live on the District yet? All I've seen is sometime this year.

I have my block training, and they've decided that we will be the first to undergo the new block training for the west end. Instead of doing Fire on Monday, I'm now doing 'Operational Training 1' which is PTI and disability awareness. On Tuesday instead of Network Rail Track Safety, I'll be doing 'Operational Training 2' which will be instructions on the Connect radio and info about SPADs! Of course this still doesn't answer the question about when it will go live, although talking to one of the fitters at Ealing Common, they've been told they have to fit the radio systems to 2 trains per night, so most of the trains should be ready soon. I'm not sure if the neccesary equipment has been installed 'upstairs' yet though.

Ahh - but by the time I have finished with him, he'll wish he was doing C stock ;D ;D ;D ;D Ironically, I am better at C stock than D stock, as I have spent more time on Westinghouse fitted trains. That's the excuse I'm going with when I balls something up anyway Something tells me Solidbond will have his hands full with another driver, so I will be able to blend into the background ;D ;D

Whilst I hate to be seen as a 'bearer of bad tidings' or a 'damp squib' or 'spoilsport', I can probably enlighten a little (but not much as I don't know myself!) on the subject of Connect Training.
Alan: so far as I'm aware although next week was the intended roll out date for the Connect training to be included on the block training week I don't believe it will happen. There are a number of factors involved in this - not least that the roll out date for the system going live has (again) 'slipped' and another is that I (as one of the 'accredited trainers') doesn't even know if the training equipment, aids, simulators etc. have been delivered and if they have, where they are!
Since I did the 'Train the trainer' course, I haven't seen the kit, had a chance to review my memory of it....
On a positive note though - it IS impressive (though let's be honest, anything will be an improvement) and I don't mean that lightly.
On a lighter note...
I've been nominated to attend a 'forum' on the Connect project in the capacity of an 'end user'. That's fine. The problem I see is that it's at Tottenham Court Road (or thereabouts) which is OK. It's on the 21st Feb. Did I hear a rumour there's a strike planned for that day? A dilema I think.....
