Still 2 diagrammed 508 units planned until 15/05/09 at least. So maybe some one is a little previous seeing 378 testing has yet to start. Not enough 313 unit available to cover all current diagrams.

The 507/508 saga is a bit of a saga if you ask me... Ended up on Merseyside replacing the 503's, send down south. A notable occurence is at Shepperton... One car placed into 455/7 units, which makes them look decidedly odd.
South Eastern Trains are to get shot of their units of the same class pretty soon too...

Where's the best place to see the SET units? I've grown quite fond of the SR 'PEP'-derived family.

Er testing been going on for the last month of unit 378 001. This week the unit is testing on the Grinstead line. The first units are due to be in service on the DC line in jan with full service provided by march originally. As the 378 are quite a few weeks late, having some 313s on until may seems sensible to me. Just incase.

Yes, I'm sure there will be the usual teething troubles.

Mainly now used on the Tunbridge Wells - Horsham services, sometimes Strood - Paddock Wood, less so Sittingbourne - Sheerness [stand in for when the 2 car class 466 isn't available]

It is not unusual to see 508s at London Bridge, certain through services to/from Tunbridge Wells and Strood are 508s!!!!!!!!
Best time to see them at London Bridge is in the terminating platforms in the PM peak, just looking at TRUST now I can tell you that tonight the 1603 London Bridge to Tonbridge will be 508205, the 1657 London Bridge - Tonbridge will be 508210.
Cheers

Strood - Paddock Wood - Tonbridge to Horsham or London Bridge.
Indeed a rather harsh journey, as I don't think the 508's have toilets!

Repair works I think, prior to handing back to lessor? At the company that took over part of the works.

I read in the latest issue of the RM, that Southern will be taking some, as they are due to take over one of the SET routes next month...Redhill-Tonbridge I think??

The latest Rail Magazine, issue 604, suggests that the SET 508's will be taken off lease shortly, two have already been so, with the rest to follow shortly. This is despite a refurbishment programme. The gaps left by the removal of these units will be filled 'by more efficient use of other rolling stock.'

When the Thameslink Programme interim services start in March, a load of Southeastern's service will be run by First Capital Connect using their own stock*. That should leave SE with a stock surplus.
(* well, some of it pilfered from Southern)

Something mentioned also about Southern using sub-hired 319's and 377's

When the Thameslink Programme interim services start in March, a load of Southeastern's service will be run by First Capital Connect using their own stock*. That should leave SE with a stock surplus. (* well, some of it pilfered from Southern) As part of Thameslink Programme KO1 (Key Output zero) in March 2009 FCC has been given 319's from Southern to run SouthEastern's Blackfriars to Sevenoaks service. Because of the lack of terimating platforms at Blackfriars as this starts the service from Sevenoaks will go north and most terimate at Kentish Town with some even going onto Bedford. To strength the rest of the service the 377s have been transferred from Southern along with new 377s Southern ordered. These will be 'owned' by Southern and rented by FCC then when the 377s go south of Blackfriars they will be hired to Southern's sister SouthEastern with the crew 'transferring' for the rest of the jounery and all fares collected south of Blackfriars going to SouthEastern. Complex.

Excuse my ignorance but the 508s are 3rd rail only of course, unlike the 313s. There is one shot showing a train headsed for Euston: was this before what I believe was the removal of 3rd rail down to the two platforms at Euston? I am sure that trains now need to run on AC into the terminus? Apologies if I am totally wrong!

There are a couple of platforms that have the third rail at Euston, cant remember the numbers though.

The last mile into Euston is dual electrified and shared with AC London Midland trains from the WCML slow lines.
If the Watford DC Line required dual-voltage stock, there'd be no place for DC-only trains at LO, since they can't run on the WLL or NLL.
