Just had a call from Jim informing that apparently one of our District colleagues decided to gain one of the infamous "I've been to Northfields" badges!
Wasn't anyone here, was it? (Couldn't have been Jim, as he told me, and Dave wasn't working late tonight...) ;D

I take it that this award ranks on par with the South Harrow badge - or is this a genuine route learning exercise?
I've always thought that Northfields would make a useful alternative terminating destination when EB was unavailable.

AlanL said that to me once when I stated that the track layout at Northfields should be modified to allow trains to be sanely terminated and started from the local line platforms at that station. I stated such because I felt that adding such a service would allow part of the Heathrow service to non-stop Northfields and South Ealing, with the other part running alongside the local service.

A pilot (no not an airline one silly , a person qualified in the layout of the area concerned) is needed to guide the lost train op back to his own territory. As I discovered through this 'ere forum (lack of detailed road training ), if Ealing Common/Broadway is not available, District line trains in the westbound local platform at Acton Town can only go to Northfields - but if it's known about in advance, a piccadilly line driver would usually be provided (acting as the pilot). As for the actual lines/sidings used - hopefully i'll never need to know

So whos fault would that have been? The signal person or the driver for not checking the points? Couldn't have been Jim, as he told me Maybe thats what he wants you to think!

This one's been explained before. If a wrong'un is set and the driver takes it he's wrong because the stick tells him which route is set (he doesn't need to look at the points). However if he notices and calls up the signaller it's the signaller that gets the b*ll*king for setting the route wrongly.

There is the added complication of programe machines - though ultimately it's down to the signaller to monitor whats happening and take control if necessary.
As the train ended up at Northfields, it's unlikely the driver would have reported being offered a wrong'un, or he'd stay put while the signalman took a release. In this case i'd say it's 90% likely the driver dropped a clanger and accepted the wrong route - but it's not the end of the world, ie it's not a spad or anything.

Nah, not me, those who know me know I'm not shy when it comes to admitting my mistakes, when I went to South Harrow I made a few calls informing my mates of what I had done, besides I have a witness I did sus out it was an Acton driver though.

Are you sure it was someone from this forum, Alan? Probably not, but it would be nice for micky-taking purposes!

We used to go down Northfields as a matter of course on our own if we dropped one or if instructed to at Acton. Only needed a pilot once we got to Nfds and had to reverse in the depot [sometimes not even then] If you were reversed via the siding you just did it.

Unfortunately, things have changed massively from a Health & Safety point of view! If a driver is not trained over a particular route and then drives his train over it without a pilot, they leave themselves open to all sorts of problems with HMRI/HSE etc.
I think it's only a matter of time before we are actually road trained to Nfds anyway.

"Come on and register on DD's forum - we need someone new to take the pi$$ out of now that its been a while since Jim and DD ventured to South Harrow." Would you join if you were given a proposition like that? Chris
