Many thanks Why would the District Line be extended to Grays There was aproposal a few years back as it would simplify c2c operations into 2 straight routes as well as running a more frequent service to Ockendon, Chafford Hundred(Lakeside) and Grays..

The traffic would be relatively low, the run times longer, and there would be more chance of trains getting delayed - which is not a good thing on the SSLs!

The traffic would be relatively low Not with Lakeside shoppers, Chafford Hundred is extremly busy and the current 30 minute service c2c offer is woefully inadequate, during the day a four car unit is filled at Chafford Hundred on each trip. Double tracking the line is surely now a must. The station building has been rebuilt enlargening it and building a bridge to Lakeside 3 times since opening in 1995.

Hmm, from a planning point of view, you really don't want a metro going that far out.
The Met is bad enough as it is, and the Bakerloo terminates to close to Central London.

Indeed, much too far out for the District considering its present track volume. The best method is new NR trains somehow, I suspect.

IIRC , in the early days of the district around 1884, it went to Southend, did it not???

Some background on my local c2c branch Ockendon - (my local ) is extremely busy in the mon-fri peaks, and lacks any real bus service at other times - so is needed, and is relied on. Chafford Hundred - has the Lakeside shopping centre attached to it, as well as a massive housing estate full of commuters. Grays - the main town in the area (population 100,000 , has a massive commuter base as well as the main local shopping centre. Currently has a 10 minute c2c service in the peaks (via 2 routes) which just about serves demand. The line between Upminster and Grays is single track, though whoever runs the service would, i'm sure, prefer it to be double tracked. There is a passing loop at Ockendon, with the rest of the line capable of accepting another track without too many problems. The other problem is Grays station. It has two through platforms (8 cars) and a bay (4 cars), so could do with re-modelling. As a new bus station has just been built next to the bay road, the station can't be extended that way, which leaves the car park - which i'm sure the commuters will have a lot of The current service is every 30 minutes both ways, increased to every 15 minutes (using the passing loop at Ockendon) in the peaks (generally towards London only in the morning, other way round in the evening). So whoever operates it is looking at some serious ££££ to do any sort of upgrade. On a personal note, I'd love it if the District line were extended to Grays, but in reality it's just a dream ;D ;D

IIRC , in the early days of the district around 1884, it went to Southend, did it not??? The tracks from east of Bow Road to Southend were owned by the London Tilbury & Southend Railway, there were some District Line trains to Southend, but the carriages were pulled by LT&SR locomotives.
