The rail further up the track could be a guide rail, used to try to reduce wheel squeal.

The extra rail by the running rail appears to be a check rail. I would guess there is a trip-cock tester nearby.

Actually, I think you're all correct - there's a rail left legitimately before/after rerailing (near) and there's a check rail (far).

Yes, there appears to be a piece of check rail for a trip cock testers and the larger piece is just a dumped bit!

There are no Trip Cock testers at Hammersmith, but there is an uphill bend to the left on leaving the station.....that'll be what the check rail is for.

Are you sure it's not a left-over from when the line was built as the contractors used to used narrow gauge locos for the purpose.
