Can anyone shed light on the 1972 Tube Stock in Hainault depot? Is it for spares, withdrawn or a long-term/aborted preservation project?

I think it is withdrawn. I have no idea why they would leave it at Hainault though.

If it's the same one's that have been there for a few years, it was proposed at one time to fit ATP equipment on them and then use as WOO-HAI dedicated shuttle or to refurb them for the W&C and take the 92TS from there for use on the Central, neither came to fruition......
They are ex Northern Line and had there shoebeams removed for transfer to HAI, that's if my memory serves me right..

Wasn't the dedicated Woodford-Hainault shuttle discontinued in the early '90s?

Wasn't the dedicated Woodford-Hainault shuttle discontinued in the early '90s? Yes, the through service was introduced at the end of 1992, with WTT 53. This was also the first timetable to use 1992 stock, which of course happened from April 1993.

Trains in a lot worse condition than that have been restored. I love the "target" board on the front - just in case anyone decides to try and move it!

Wasn't one of the cars from this unit used for the new TRC?

A mamouth task indeed to restore the 72ts but highly unlikely unless someone has extremely deep pockets and is willing to take on the bureacracy of LU/Metromess/Dubeous Lines.
The 62ts is a far more worthy candidate and is an ongoing project but needs more volunteers as does L11 at Epping although the latter cosmetically only.
I bent over backwards to save L11 from a one way trip to the scrapman and along with inside help from various departments have saved her from this fate, again help in restoring her would be useful, along with Epping Cabin.
So if you've got a spare weekend why not lend a hand, contact details on the CHT website or PM me and I will forward messages.
