Hi there!
This is my first post and am hoping someone out there can help/advise.
Have always wanted a trainset with an Underground train on it.
I have managed to purchase an Underground train on ebay that runs on OO gauge. The problem is I don't have any layout/track/knowledge about what to do next!
I've seen the Hornby trackmats and they seem boring to me. Ideally I'd like to find a good layout someone has already made (or is willing to make), and I've been searching on ebay for 4 weeks now! I'm in London and everything that I ahve seen that i've liked is either too far away and/or too big.
So, its a big ask, but is there anyone out there that has a funky layout they no longer require that I could buy from them or someone who can advise the best way to go about building one? Basically, I want something that is more than just an oval and is about the size of an oblong dinner table for 4 if that makes sense.
I really want to run my new train and have no idea even how to run it on any layout that I get, so honestly I am a complete novice, looking for a mate to help me out!

It is fairly unusual for a model railway to be up for sale. Hobbyists can spend many years working on one layout. Even if they eventually decide to start a different one, they will often salvage the track and some scenery for re-use. And there are not many layouts featuring LU, so they are very seldom available.
I would suggest that you have a look at some of the monthly model railway magazines. Model Rail is quite good for beginners: it explains things clearly and has lots of photos.
It would probably be useful to get in touch with a local model railway club and/or go to a few model railway exhibitions to see how others have put layouts together.
Hope this helps.

I would agree with 'sydneynick' - have a look at some magazines first to get an idea of what's what.
These days you have a choice of power - digital or analogue - though now that you've already purchased your first train, you've possibly already made that decision.
Have you visited any model shops in your area? Firstly, they might have layouts for sale or adverts in their window from someone who may build or sell them. Secondly, you'll get to know what the real costs are - whilst eBay can be useful, there are also a lot of rip off merchants when it comes to model railway bit's & bob's.

I'd suggest a visit to: www.newrailwaymodellers.co.uk/Forums/There is a forum specifically on layout design and lots of people willing to share ideas. I'd start by trying to firm up on (a) size and (b) what you want from the layout operationally (i.e. do you want to do lots of stopping and starting, or just watch trains whizzing round).

Sometimes there are second hand layouts for sale in the classified ads in some mags. 'Railway Modeller' is worth a go in that respect. Good luck.

Hi there!
Thanks for all the advice so far.
Well, guess what? I've bought my first ever model train!
I was lucky enough to win a sale on ebay. A guy in the US was selling a 2 car Central line train from metromodels. I got it for just under 90 quid.
Here are the details:
Up for auction is a USED Metro Models “OO” or HO scale London Underground Tube Train Set, consisting of two DM cars, Model MM004, both powered by Tenshodo power trucks (1 per car). I purchased these as new about 5 years ago. These are models of the 1992 Tube stock that are currently in use on the Underground. The models are in MINT condition, they are wired for directional LED lighting (red or white LED, forward/backward) and have acetate sheet in the interiors to simulate the windows.
Anyway, the train is lovely. The guy sent me the train in its original box with all the paperwork from when he had bought it. A nice guy.
Now need a readymade layout! I don't think I could build one from scratch but would rather buy one that is made that I could add to. Something around 5ft x 3ft.
I'm continuing to look on ebay! but if anyone knows of a OO layout for sale in London please please let me know.
Regards

Good luck. Check the net regularly. Maybe you can buy a layout that can be modified-after all, some of the central line was ex-LNER! To be correct you should buy 2 'B' cars- ie cars without cab nor shoebeams to make a 4 car train!

Hi there!
Metman - Thanks for the link. That layout looks brilliant but it is too big. If you see anymore please let me know.
For those that want pics of my newly acquired train, please can someone tell me how to go about attaching pics to a message like this or I can email you them. It really does look like a central line 92 train.

Dear All
Thanks for all the msgs! Well, I took the advice and have been keeping an eye out on ebay for several months now for a oo layout to go with my 2 carridge central line train...people do sell layouts in various conditions and I've been holding out for a really nice one.
I finally took the plunge and last night was successful on a lovely little layout. Total cost £254. It has amazing detail and the buildings and stations have lights and controls d=for sounds such as a church bell! it's 6ft 3 and with carry handles and a wooden box to keep it protected.
However, I don't know the first thing about how to set myself up. How do put the train on the track, how do I make sure the train doesn't crash into anythign etc etc.
So I'm wondering, is there an oo enthusiast out there local to where I live in Forest Hill, SE23, who's up for a cuppa and having a whizz at my layout and helping me?
Many thanks
Aadil
