Having done a bit of research on Battery Locos (not easy as there is b##### all information available) as a prelude to bulding a couple in 'OO' scale, a few questions kept coming to mind.
Firstly, by the look of the pictures available, did front end numbers only appear on them in the mid-late sixties?
Secondly, did the one example built at Acton Works differ externally from the others?
Thirdly, what colour were the roofs painted during the early sixties when they were maroon?
Finally, just HOW bad were the Metro-Cammell ones built in the eighties that they lasted for next to no time compared to the others? What caused their early demise? Were they the 'Baby Deltics' of the LT network?
Thanks in advance, Glyn.

London Transport went through a period of poor design and build quality in the 80s! I could be wrong, but didnt they have electrical equipment from Kieppe; the group behind the 1983 tube stocks equpiment?

Was that the period that spawned the stock that had to go back to Met-Cam to be 'taken in' by an inch?

They couldn't be used on long rail trains the brake & control systems weren't compatible with the style of driving required.

Wouldn't it have been cheaper to modify them then scrap them! Oh sorry, I forgot. It was a railway problem. Common sense not a requirement! I wonder who had the big 'I told you so' moment with that one then!

I don't suppose anyone out there has a picture of a clean Battery loco taken in the early 60's so I can get the roof colour on my model one right? Would I be right in thinking that the roof was painted in that awful red-oxide colour that graces the roof of the '38 set at Acton Depot? I know that, should I get it wrong and turn up with the finished model at Acton in March, you'll all laugh!

Good, someone else that hates the red roofs! I like a nice grey/green/black roof like the Northern Line 38 stock had.
Glyn go for the grey roof I think it'll look better with the red/brown service livery.

I haven't a photo but having spent 1971-1975 working at Lillie bridge I can tell you, whatever colour the rooves (roofs?) were were painted, they always looked like a mix of slate grey and matt black.

Ok, I'll weather it! It sounds like the easier option. I was just wondering as I have already weathered one and I didn't fancy the idea of doing another. Needs must I s'pose! Thanks guys'
