Had a great driver today from Westminster to Earls Court. I think his name was Bob. At Westminster he said " Ladies and Gentlemen, there is more than one door on this train and maybe if you go along the train, you might be able to find more doors" Between Westminster and St James's Park, he told us that the oldest part of the District Line was between Westminster and South Kensington. Between Victoria and Sloane Square, he was like " Today is smiley day (or something like that) (then some other stuff) and so, if you see someone smiling at you in the carriage, smile back at them" Then some guy started smiling at me lol. Between South Kensington and Gloucester Road, he said some stuff which I couldn't hear and I heard " Mr Gloucester went to Gloucester" Between Gloucester Road and Earl's Court, he said " The next station is Earl's Court, where I will be getting off . Also Ladies and Gentlemen, you might be interested to know that the first escalator on the London Underground was installed at Earl's Court on the 19th of October 1911. It was from the District Line to the Piccadilly Line. But the public of London were too afraid to use it, so a man with a wooden leg went on the escalator up and down, up and down to show the public that it was safe. But everyone thought, how did he loose his leg in the first place? At Earl's Court, you can change for the Piccadilly Line and District Line service to other destinations. Please take your belongings, your children, your rubbish and your smile when you leave the train. Thank you Ladies and Gentlemen, you have been very nice. Have a nice evening, and have a nice weekend. Thank you." What a great driver!

Sounds like he loves the sound of his own voice.
I had one on the Picc a couple of years back, started getting on my nerves after a few stops.
A comment here and there, is fine.
They are drivers, not tour guides.

I think to us enthusiasts, regulars and staff it may get irritating - but joe public, and even more so his cousin joe tourist, will appreciate it no end. Certainly on the Ds it'll be a more pleasing voice to hear than the DVA droning on in the same artificially cheery voice. At least you know there's a real happiness behind the dulcet tones of a cheerful driver.

I think peeps forget that drivers are real hooman beans, and when they actually talk to their passengers, it makes us all feel a little more cared for. Or something. I think it's fantastic! ;D

I know this driver, he only started this year. At least he shows an interest in his job, but I'm not sure how impressed the bigwigs from 55 Broadway will be if they get on his train - he can be a bit over the top.

Also sounds like one of the Supervisors along the Met... Rush hour commentary is constant! Keeps a lot of the people smiling when they are waiting for their train.

I was one of his passengers a few weeks back. He says the District Line's colour is green because it's got more stations with "Green" in the name than any other line! As to the bigwigs' reaction - they might think that if one of you can drive a train and amuse us punters at the same time why shouldn't you all do it ?

reminds me of a time when the nll was silverlink and the conductor said 'the next station is west hampstead alight hear for the house of CRAIG DAVID' Now that one is funny! I'm in agreement with Tubeboy. I have absolutely zero tolerance for drivers constantly making stupid or supposedly "funny" announcements. I've been on a train with the aforementioned Vic driver and also some clown on the Bakerloo and seen the majority of people staring up to the ceiling rolling their eyeballs willing him to shut up - myself included. It also makes people tune out (if they havent already got off to wait for the next train) meaning when something important does happen that merits a PA people will take no notice. The DVA is fine for announcing stations etc and because a human voice sounds so different, people listen when they hear it on a train (unlike the stations where they totally overdo the needless PAs). I'll accept that the odd off-the-cuff remark can be funny and sometimes lightens a bad situation, but there is no need to dish out the claptrap at every poxy station. If people want to rabbit on about nonsense they should get a job in hospital radio or join the stand-up circuit. After all they pay us to be in charge of driving the train - can a driver be giving it 100% focus on the road if cracking bad jokes and giving the impression of some kind of attention-defecit-disorder to the already weary and over-charged punters? If I was a TOM or above i'd be pulling these drivers into the office and reminding them of their roles and responsibilities. Failure to cease the constant mumbo-jumbo would be treated as a performance issue.

I was on the 2nd pic that reverses at kings cross on a sunday once and the Top didnt make a single announcement to tell punters most of whom were drunk/asleep/not paying attention that it reverses in service to go west bound from the east platform. I felt a bit annoyed that he couldnt be bothered to announce the victoria line being closed, covent garden being closed or russel square being closed (i think both stations were shut). Its not a hard thing to do surely? I for one would rather too much than none at all and I know whats going on so imagine these people who are clueless (and there are a lot of them)
