aetearlscourt once bemoaned the fact that EN41 was removed at Whitechapel and that the loss of this signal prevented trains from reversing on the running lines at Whitechapel and forced such trains to go down to Aldgate East and reverse there. A quick check of www.trainweb.org/districtdave/Whitechapel.jpg shows that EN41 was the wrong-road shunt reading over 27 crossover, allowing a train to clear platform 3, do a main-line shunt to platform 2 and tip in, allowing trains to enter 3 from Stepney Green. Why was EN41 taken out, though, especially since the alternative (Aldgate East) requires the Line Controller to inform citysig and/or Harsig at Baker Street?

EN41 was put in so that with steam hauled engineer's trains, the loco could run round the train, which meant that it could be cleared with a train in the platform. Trains in both Westbound platforms can go back Eastbound with out a main line shunt. This move uses EN37 or EN38.

So basically EN41 was no longer needed, since its primary use was long gone and its secondary use (i.e. clearing one of the w/b platforms for another train without departing passenger over 18 crossover) was not deemed necessary?
