Wasn 't it lucky that the points were recently reinstated between the Picc and district at Hammersmith westbound. On Thursday Nov 20 th my west bound Picc train No 364 became stalled due to a smell of burning at Hammersmith west. Two Picc trains behind were routed down the local and guess what there was a failure at Stamford Brook on the west local.
By the time the Fire Brigade, DMT and fitter attended some 20 minutes had passed. So I was a little surprised to pass these trains packed with the punters I'd kicked off my train still between Ravenscourt Park and Stamford Brook! I took the dud train to Northfields depot, filled out the paperwork at Bollo (x) House Acton and was told to make my way back to Arnos Grove for meal relief and next pick up (fat chance ).
Travelling back through Hammersmith I saw for the first time in my 17 years on the Picc a District for Ealing Broadway in the west bound fast at Hammersmith. The failure at Stamford Brook was ongoing and to ease the 'blocking back' the train was diverted. The punters didn 't half look confused the poor loves.

And that wasn't the only problem on the District - we also had a points failure at Barking, a spad at Earls Court and a spad at Tower Hill. Severe delays? carnage more like!!

Interesting; I was reading about this broken down train on the Picc Hammersmith West, didn’t expect to read an account of it from the actual driver of the train.
Its good news about the points being reinstatated. I’m sure it was only a few weeks back when they were still out of commission so they appeared to have been re-installed in the nick of time. When I used to travel a lot through Hammersmith seven years go, every now and then, I’d see Piccs on the EB local line. I also saw the sight of a District WB coming into the WB Picc line at Hammersmith one day. And the driver needed to make special effort to announce that his train could not call at Chiswick Park, as there are no platforms there for the fast lines. Thing is, I don't think drivers cover these routes as a part of any roster, so I ain't sure how after they are trained, they are able to refresh their learning of the routes (Picc drivers over the local, District drivers over the fast).
Regarding Picc trains, smells of burning appear to be common problems – very disruptive when it occurs in Central London, which locks down half the line due to lack of emergency reversing facilities. Is this a rolling stock issue, coz it seems to happen a bit too often in comparison to other lines?

A lot of it is due to the extra weight put on the trains when refurbed, puts more strain on motors and bearings.

17 Points at hammersmith were only re-commisioned last weekend
we always get smashed up trainstops along the fast lines (picc) due to broken axel's on the trains this been happening a few times now so nothing new

Hot axel boxes are the main problem with the 73ts - though I thought 'they' sorted that last year As far as route knowledge goes, it is the train op's responsibility to make sure he/she knows all the route's and moves applicable to his/her line. As the District/Picc runs parallel to each other, and most signals are in the same place on both lines, it's not really an issue. You just have to remember where to rejoin your own line, and not go to places like South Harrow. oops ;D ;D ;D
