It was used for a service to Kings Cross, operated over a chord between the LTSR slow lines (as that part of the DR actually was in those days) and the GOBLIN. I think this service was what was diverted to Barking to form the eastern terminus of the GOBLIN.
Q8 would know if LT signalling was ever used to control it.

Signalling at East Ham was controlled by the London Tilbury & Southend Railway Company, East Ham No1 Signal Box was at the London end of the station & East Ham No 2 signal box was at the Barking end of the station. By the time London Transport controlled the signalling at East Ham, the Bay road had long closed. The book the LT&S Railway Volume 2 by Peter Kay has the History of this section of the District Line with Maps & Photo's of the Line.

I know where Ashfield House is, but who is gary? Aarrgghh! One on forum I was on (I can't remember which) the exact same question, "Who is Gary?" caused about a month of animosity over somethign that turned out after many thousand words and several departures to be a misunderstanding about something incredibly minor
