heading to heathrow on the piccadilly line last night.... just where the picc and district emerge onto the viaduct in west london (is it just after hammersmith sta?) i noticed that the viaduct continues in towards central london at the higher level, but with the track lifted - what lines used to use this viaduct and where did it go? cheers in advance for any replies....

It used to be a connection with the H&C between Hammersmith and Goldhawk Road, I can't remember off the top of my head the exact date when it ceased to be used anymore. Unfortunately I cannot see this connection being reinstated because of the present structure of the area, there’s a large office block (IIRC) now obstructing the path where the connection used to go. So unless someone can think up a very smart idea on how to run a Railway line right though the middle of a building, I don’t see much hope of a future for the connection. That's all I really know about the viaduct, maybe someone who has more knowledge on it can go into greater depths of detail.

Yep, not 100% sure on the history but I think Christopher is right. They're collectively known as the KR structures and they're sadly not coming back into service anytime soon. I know that SSL even demolished a couple of arches 2 years ago and some cable bridges were built on them about 10 years ago.
