Wikipedia mentions sleet tenders Nos ST1/ST2. Having never seen any mention of them before in any publication. Does anyone out there know what they looked like and how often they were used. I guess they were not a success! Thanks.

Wikipedia mentions sleet tenders Nos ST1/ST2. Having never seen any mention of them before in any publication. Does anyone out there know what they looked like and how often they were used. I guess they were not a success! Thanks. They looked like this: www.ltmcollection.org/photos/photo/photo.html?_IXMAXHITS_=1&_IXSR_=B2uCUc20_2c&IXsummary=results/results&IXsearch=sleet&_IXFIRST_=2&IXenlarge=i0000bm4I was told by a driver colleague when I worked on the Picc that they were tried on that line but they had one major defect. They dropped the track circuit ahead of the train so it got tripped at any signal which was close to the block joint - which was most of them. Why on earth they didn't think of that before spending all that money developing the thing, I'll never know but it suggests that things weren't that different in those days. The late Graeme Bruce relates a similar story and some technical details in his book, "Workhorses of the London Underground" published in 1987 by Capital Transport.
