From another forum I have this information about diesels that could in theory have worked down the City Widened Lines to Faringdon Junction, Snow Hill tunnel, High Holborn Low Level and on to the Southern: From the SR 1962 Route Availability book. These were the diesel classes that *could* work between Holborn Low Level and Holborn Viaduct to Herne Hill. There were restrictions but mainly in the Herne Hill area:
D5500 D5300 D5500 D5700 D5900 D6100 D6500 D6700 D8000 D8200 D8400 D9000 10000-1 10201-3
The query is which of these series were fitted with tripcocks? The BTH Class 15, NBL Class 21, Baby Deltics Class 23, all come to mind. Today reputedly only Classes 21, 33 and 73 are permitted on the CWL although I query if Class 20 are also allowed. What haulage will p/way trains use when the line to Moorgate is severed, and the junction plain-lined? Will the 66s used on LU contracts be permitted?

I have seen a picture of a class 24 (D5000) with states that trip-cocks were fitted. I'll look it out when I get a chance.

Thanks! I think the 5000 series were used on SR goods trains, as well as on special passenger workings from other regions (based at Cricklewood?).

I'm sure when Moorgate was peaks only pre-electrification & loco hauled to MML & ECML they were using Cl31 locos.

I have seen EE Class 31s used on the ER suburban trains at Moorgate CWL..I would imagine from Hertford North? And Welwyn? Also the LMR DMUs, though I am no au fait with their destinations. This would be summer 1973. Of course Liverpool Street had a bay back then with stabled A Stock!

Has the plan to re-open the link to ECML from Thameslink been dropped?

I believe the plan is still to have the link installed - the box is there - it just needs the track laid. It was the reason that the Great Northern Electric franchise and Thameslink franchise were merged.

The link will eventually be installed, but before it can sensibly be used, the capacity of the Thameslink route between St Pancras and London Bridge needs to be upgraded, as otherwise there simply won't be room for all the extra trains. Through services are projected to commence in 2014.
