Does anyone know where I can obtain a picture of a rebuilt 1935 streamlined DM after rebuilding please? Apart from a shot of one during the rebuilding purpose it is the one thing noticeable by it's absence in Piers Connor's book 'The 1938 Tube Stock' (an altogether superb book just in case anyone thinks I am knocking it). One half of one of the coaches ended up as part of a training vehicle numbered '999'. Does anyone have any info on that and is it still in existance? So many questions! Thanks for your indulgence.

Think they're all long gone,by the time they were put on the Ongar shuttles they all had conventional cabs, one unit hung around at Hainault for a while after withdrawal as a drawing office for the articulated train project, another idea that came to nothing.

That's just reminded..I have got hold of my copy of UndergrounD magazine issue 10, "THE 1935 EXPERIMENTAL TUBE STOCK" written by my former colleagues Piers Connor and Brian Hardy, and Edited by Yours Truly. I should offer to Xerox my copy if that will help.
The articulated was on accomodation bogies in 1974 in Acton Works before it was cut up in 1975.
The last ex-streamlined converted Trailer ran in service on the Northern 012489, and was withdrawn in1976, being scrapped 16th February 1977.
However there are just two LT photos of the streamlined to trailer conversion work, and nothing of the interior post-conversion.

With these old UndergrounD magazines, Oracle, could the contributors not be contacted to ask if they can be scanned and put on the internet as they are so difficult to get hold of? After all, LURS do put some articles on their website.

I have the issues that I Edited and with LURS' permission I could scan them and make them available on my personal website or that of LURS or even Trans-Pennine Publishing for whom I now work. There were issues 1-4 I think it was in the 'new' series, after UN started, replacing the original UD magazines, that were before my time. Then there were a few after I moved south: the late Bob Greenaway took over from me.
If any LURS committee member is reading this, may I ask for permission please to do so, at least of my copies? I know that there are DD members out there with the rest of the issues.

Thanks for your efforts guys. I purchased a couple of the LURS books on standard stock at the 1990 Morden open day. I passed on the 1935 one because, back then, I didn't know what the hell it was! Lesson? Never pass on ANYTHING!

I still to this day don't know what happened to my copies of UndergrounD and also printers' sheets that I edited. I was prepared to pay just about anything for copies of the issues that I had my name in, and even today would pay £25 each. I don't now have a copy of two books with my name on the front, one of which is a 'railway book'. Moral: never pass on ANYTHING and don't lose it when you get it!

It would appear from information in Piers Connors book 'The 1938 Tube Stock' that one of the rebuilt streamliners was included in a railtour that ran on the 14th of October, 1973. The tour ran from High Street Kensington and ran to Olympia, Edgeware Road, Hammersmith, Wimbledon, Richmond, Golders Green, Arnos Grove and back to High Street Kensington. The 6-car formation included rebuilt car 012497. Hopefully, someone has a picture of it. Thanks.

Very interesting TP, the end doors look slightly narrower in that picture.

Photos are so educational. I was always under the impression that they had 1949 bogies under them. It just shows how wrong you (I) can be!

The bogies for the 36/38 stocks were very similar and motor bogies looked like trailer bogies with shoegear until you got underneath. They were designed that way.

Tube Trains Under London has interesting notes on the equipment used on the cars as delivered. OT, granted, but am I right in saying that there were 6 different motor control schemes in total? If so, which one(s) did the flat ended train get, and, as built, were they compatible with the later 1938 tube stock? Also, when were the flat ended units made backwards compatible with the standard stock? Delivered they had wedgelock couplers, but I'm sure Ive seen a pic of one (silver by then) at North Weald with a Ward coupler. AND...the $64,000 question, what did they sound like whilst running?

I think the Ward couplers came in 1957 when the 35TS took over the Ongar shuttle.

Had a ride to Ongar & back just before they were withdrawn, sounded very similar to the main 38TS fleet.

According to Piers Connor's excellent 'The 1938 Tube Stock' ward couplers and high level air hoses were fittted in 1949 when the units were converted for use on the Central line which had the similarly-equipped 'standard' stock at the time. They were used on Loughton-Epping and occasional Hainault-Woodford services until transfer to the Piccadilly in 1954 for the Holborn-Aldwych service. It was in 1957 that they returned to the Central for the Ongar line and they recieved their 1927 'standard' stock trailers in 1958. One unit was held back in 1957 for regenerative brake testing until 1960.
I don't suppose anyone has seen any cine film of them in operation?

I'm sure theres a clip on the video 'Londons Lost Underground Trains'. Could be mistaken though. So they were painted silver in '57 upon transfer? Presumably in '54 they replaced the single cars of converted gate stock left running the aldwych shuttle? A pity that sort of variety no longer exists. Many thanks for the info though!

According to Piers Connors book, silver came to them between '63 and '65.

Yes, that sounds about right. The 35ts flat ends were converted to run with 1927 stock trailers. They received ward couplings and pipework to their fronts!
I guess they sounded like 38ts?

So says Towerman. But that was after standardisation...
