For modelling purposes can anyone please tell me the distance between cable hangers? Many thanks

I had this same question, as I'm building a layout using EFE and Radley models stock and I decided to use Google Earth looking over London. From these views I estimate 2.5 feet or 10 mm for spacing on the old type of stand-alone hanger.
Hope this helps.

But true scale spacing may not look right. It's a bit like telegraph poles: if they are spaced at true scale distances they look too far apart.

Nice job Metman!!! I might copy your spacing rather than the old stand alone cable posts at 5GBP per fifty from Radley. I assume the vertical straps are hand made? Just curious what do you use for the actual cables?

Don't forget that the intermediate straps are meant to be hanging off the airmain - hence the top one being sort of yakky galvanised, rather than sheathed.

I used the radley models posts and hand made pieces of wire. Its a bit crued, but with so many to do....
The actual cables are indeed just old bits of wire. The top one, as MRFS correctly says is the air main, so a piece of garden wire was used and painted a dull metal colour.
As with all things model, get out there and see the prototypes for yourself!

Thanks Metman for the details on the cable hangers. Believe me I would like nothing more than to go on the underground and do some research. I live in the US, so not trivial to do. Next trip will be around a weekend where I can gain access to the Acton works, maybe next March...
