Hi all, Why did Shadwell station get extended before all the other stations that have to be extended? It's already finished now!
Thanks, Uzair

Shadwell was still being worked on a couple of weeks ago! I am surprised it is now finished. I believe there is a new 'east' exit. Whether this will be for normal use or as an emergency exit I am not yet sure.
Actually, Poplar was the first station to be lengthened to accommodate three vehicle trains, completed back in November 2006.

or Canary Wharf when it re-opened many years ago.

or Canary Wharf when it re-opened many years ago. But the original Canary Wharf station never opened. I would say the first station to close, and re-open with platforms long enough for 3 car trains was Island Gardens.

Certainly 'yes' to Canary Wharf (or was it Bank?), but I only quoted Poplar as the 'first' because it was the 'first' under the current expansion for 2012. (Perhaps I should have said that - sorry if I misled!)

I was there last week and it certainly isn't finished, although the platform itself is. I think it's because they had to do some tunnelling through the viaduct for the second exit, so it was tendered as a separate project.
You might also ask why Tower Gateway is being done before Bank, when Tower Gateway won't have regular three car services for the foreseeable future.

Tower Gateway is being done now, because it will take a while to extend, and as Beckton services are only running to Canning Town (because of the new junction being built), no extra services need to be diverted to Bank. If Tower Gateway wasn't extended yet, and Bank was closed for some reason, most trains would have to terminate at Shadwell, and the Tower Gateway - Beckton service would get too crowded because of passengers using that station instead of Bank.

I believe there is a new 'east' exit. Whether this will be for normal use or as an emergency exit I am not yet sure. It is an emergency exit according to the DLR website. Common myth. Beckton services are not curtailed at Canning Town because of the Canning Town junction development. It is because Tower Gateway is closed. There are in fact more Beckton services running through the Canning Town junction then there were before the development works.

The question many people have been asking.

Because of the works at Mudchute trains from Bank are occupying the reversing facilities at Crossharbour and Canary Wharf. That half the the trains from Stratford are terminating at Poplar, which means there's nowhere to terminate the Beckton trains other than Canning Town. The line at Shadwell is too busy to terminate trains there.
(this all only applies during the peaks - assuming the junction at Canning Town is usable, they could conceivably run to Poplar off peak)

PASSING SHADWELL YESTERDAY (22.08.08):
The platform extension at the east end is NOT yet complete.
* Platform surface looks finished and there are seats, line route maps and advert stand in place. No station name signs yet.
* Fencing along both sides to protect workmen from platform edges
* Platform lighting poles in place with plastic around the bottom sections.
* The 'emergency' (east) exit has a metal 'archway' over it, but no signage yet.
* The extended platform is still barriered off from the rest of the platform.
* No OPO mirror at the three-car mark.
* Concrete mixer (or similar apparatus) on platform!
* A lot of 'clutter' still lying around on platform.
When it is finished, it will be interesting to see if they open it up with a suitable notice as at Poplar.

No OPO mirror at the three-car mark. Also the two car mirror is bolted to the platform base, meaning there's a gap in the edging/surfacing. I went down to Greenwich today and am impressed by the progress at the other stations - pretty much all of them have girders or concrete bases for the platform extensions in place. Mudchute is especially impressive - they've finished the northbound platform and are almost done with the southbound. Both have massive new canopies.

IIRC Poplar reversal of the Stratford service doesn't affect ability of Beckton trains to terminate there. Beckton services can and have terminated:
a) in the WB platform at Poplar then run westbound, reverse before the junction and return to the EB at Poplar b) in the WB platform at Poplar then immediately reverse (wrong road?) to cross to the EB just before Blackwall.

And remember, DLR trains can terminate and reverse in next to no time, as there is no driver who needs to change ends. The PSA doesn't even have to move, except to change the destination.

(a) is possibly incompatible with the (delayed, still not happened removal of the Westferry flyover, and I'm not sure it's possible without fouling the junction, while (b) occupies the westbound track for a long period of time. I'd be curious which method they were using in March/April when Beckton trains were terminating at Poplar. The Stratford service using Poplar is the only thing that's changed, so it seems the most likely candidate. When things on the Isle of Dogs go back to normal on Tuesday the Beckton trains will still be terminating at Canning Town though. Hmm.

(b) was used most on the weekends in that time for the Beckton service, with the KGV service terminating at Blackwall but using the same crossover. During the week I remember clearly seeing (a) being used.
Is the frequency of the Bank-KGV service still the same?

The couple of times I've been on a Stratford-Poplar train, (a) has been the method used to reverse the trains.

Whether this will be for normal use or as an emergency exit I am not yet sure. I'd like to have seen them extend the platforms in the opposite direction, that way they could have integrated an additonal DLR exit with the new northern entrance to Shadwell ELL. I imagine this would not have been cheep though, as the viaduct would have needed to be widened. But it would save people having to cross Watney Market to interchange between the two stations. And as both stations were being refurbished at once this would have been the perfect time to do it.

Even though the station signs show that ALL trains from Beckton terminate at Canning Town, I've managed to catch at least half-a-dozen from Beckton Park that have terminated at Poplar. All off-peak or at weekends, of course.
So really, shouldn't the 'Canning Town' to 'Poplar' stretch be shown as 'restricted service' rather than as non-existent?
