I am aware of the current division of the Bank Monument complex due to escalator works, and that they are not recommending changing trains there, except between the Northern and Docklands.
Is the only means to accomplish this change using the direct staircase or is there another route possible? Is there an escalator operating on any part of the route?
With the closure of Tower Gateway from June, I am now taking "first train and change where expedient". What will Bank be like by then?

This link seems to have a comprehensive guide to what is and isn't doable at Bank-Monument. At the bank end it seems they've blocked several routes that don't involve any escalators. Why?

They've had to completely reassess the walking routes around the station - it's pretty much one way. This is to comply with various regulations concerning evacuation and other such emergency procedures.

It turns out it's all stairs to go from platforms 3 and 4 to 9 and 10, but escalator up then stairs down in reverse - nothing to choose for me on the way in but a great improvement on the way out.

I used it as ain interchange today... no problems from Central to W&C and then later from Central to Northern... I just avoided the mass throng for the lifts and went down the 'emergency' stairs...
