Obviously when Crossrail is built they will need drivers. I realise it will be quite far away. But does anyone think LUL drivers will have a good chance of being successful if applying for a Crossrail driving job ?
I would like very much to be a Crossrail driver.

Even though Crossrail will probably be built and fitted with ATO before the District Line gets ATO?

As I understand it, ATO is not being considered for any part of National/Network Rail. I understand Network Rail want nothing to do with it.

And with the Metronet SSL signalling contracts cancelled for now, it looks like the District won't have ATO for a long time.

Thameslink will also gain ATO in the central area, likely based on the ERTMS in-cab signalling system, which is also being rolled out across the whole national network in the longer term, so further ATO installations on busy sections are likely.

Im no expert on ATO/ATP systems.. but from what I hear I am more of a fan of NR's in cab signalling / ATO system, is it seems less likely it will replace the driver.. however LUL's seems more likely to replace drivers

Considering that its very likely Heathrow Express/Connect will be absorbed (in the long run), plus FGW drivers will already have good route knowledge, they'll probably externally advertise the rest of the jobs, for experienced NR drivers... Never say never though!

Never say never though! You know, if they'll just add Heathrow NR to the Travelcard bit of the Rail Settlement Plan, I'll be happy... For something charging an absurd premium, they don't half have wobbly doors when they open and bad video displays. (The screens are fine, a minor vertical alignment issue aside, but some bright spark thinks saving disk space is worth screwing the video compression the playback system uses up to the max.) Just using the Connect, though, would be nice...

Don't forget that technology wise the trains are ancient! Also, they we're built for non-stop high speed services that go for hours at a time, not 15 minutes.
I agree about the screens though. The countless fault logs i've put in for some of the units... I've given up in the end.
As for the doors, on some units they've been tweaked to open/close slower so they last longer, that's why they wobble.
And the units are currently under-going an over-haul anyway, albeit one by one though.
As for TC's to Heathrow. NEVER! If anything the price on the Connect should go up IMO.

I feel it an unfortunate anomaly that BAA paid for the spur and station, then, because Heathrow's still in Z6 and so are the LUL stations... (Great idea on paper. And I suppose it keeps the loading down. The Heathrow complex is big enough that it's not going to get used casually, though, isn't it? I've used it precisely once when running late to work, in six weeks of actually living nearby in Hampton/Feltham...)

Surely it is precisely because LU serve Heathrow that travelcards are not valid on the express - after all, the express is providing a premium service and the fares reflect that.

Indeed £1.73 a minute for first class single! Only £1.23 if you're going to Terminal 5 though. And if we feel like it, we may even throw in a delay or two, just so you get your monies worth. ;D

But they're not valid on the Connect, either... and that one isn't a premium service. It should have been CAA not BAA funded... ;D
