I remember going to an open day at Upmister depot some time and going on a steam train from Upminster to Upney and back. As there were no connections to the district from the British Rail network east of Bow, would they have run this steam loco through the cut and cover tunnels or would it have arrived at Upminster by road?

The steam loco ran through the central area to Upminster. A photo appeared at the time in Underground News, taken by the late Bob Greenaway.

The engine was 'topped & tailed' by battery locos, albeit in 'light steam', but the combo was split briefly at St.James's Park to allow photos to be taken that gave the impression the loco was leading.

I remeber hearing a steam loco "puffing away", between Upminster Bridge and Upminster, during the night in 1966 when I was up tending to my young son. I don't remember hearing one at any other time, as I normally slept through the night.

It helped that the then District Line General Manager was an enthusiast and keen for such things to take place on the "DR".
He also dreamed about building a siding at Victoria to serve the District's then Grosvenor Gardens head offices where his 'Director's Saloon' (the 2 Q38 DM cars) could be stabled...
Oh and of setting up his own District Line version of Distribution Services using ex-STL 'J'-type breakdown tenders to convey internal mail.
Well, as I said, it was only a dream!

What an agreeable fantasy... with EU competition rules, LUL could go into the mail business of course, we might even get staffed ticket offices back

As I recall we had steam on the District for the 125 in 1993. I was night DDM that weekend. I think they ran it between Acton Town to Barons Court, however it had to enter and leave Ealing Common depot via the west end coz it wasn´t allowed down the bank.

We also had an Open day at Ealing later that year, I recall when we went around checking everyone had gone before we put the juice back on the Alps and the sheds , we found some fella enjoying himself in the empty battery compartment of an old battery loco on the Alps.

Yep, steam used to run regularly on the District till 1971. There was a small fleet of ex GWR pannier tanks based at Lillie Bridge and Neasden.
It is quite possible that steam was heard at Upminster in 1966, it was a common occurence then.
In my days at PG we'd regularly follow a steamer round from EC to Edgware Road on the first one to High Street or Edgware Road. That train would run to Baker Street, run round, then go back on the Met main line to Neasden.
At that time there were also several places in the east end where BR tracks crossed the DR to serve the chemiclal works at West Ham and other places, and a connection at upminster to get stock onto the Romford branch.
There was also a big coal depot at High Street where the hotel now is that was served exclusively by steam hauled trains.

A District line general manager who is an enthusiast, I aways thought the Met had the only general manager who was an enthusiast (Mick Scott) who was this I can't think of anyone.
