Just been flicking through this document, which I came upon in the Uni Library. Needless to say it just proves nothing is new, and red tape rules. Some schemes: - Improved interchanges at Euston Square/Euston, Fenchurch Street/Tower Hill, Hammersmith stations, and the three West Hampstead Stations
- Orbital rail scheme on BR using North, South and West London lines, with new tunnel for crossing east london.
- Providing 20min interval services between Greenford and N Woolwich, using new chord at Acton Main Line; also Clapham Jnct. to Barking (west london-north london-GOB). Includes a station at Junction Road in North London.
- The infamous Fleet/River/Jubilee line.
- Chelsea-Hackney Line, via Dalston, Shoreditch Church, Old Street, Farringdon, Holborn, Aldwych, Waterloo, Milbank, Victoria and Chelsea.
- TWO crossrail schemes, the northern one similar to present core, and the southern one between Victoria and London Bridge.
- Croxley Link
- Augmenting the Bakerloo service north of Queens Park.
34 years later...

Here's a sampling of what has changed
The Underground is now part of Transport for London. British Rail has been privatised, with many TOCs on the scene. The Waterloo and City line is now part of the Underground. The East London and Hammersmith & City lines were segregated from the Met. London Overground is now in existence, with the East London Line to be a part of that organization once it is refurbished. The Bakerloo no longer runs to Watford Junction The Bakerloo's Stanmore branch is the northern section of the Jubilee. The Hainault loop of the Central Line is no longer self-contained. The Central no longer serves Ongar. The District's shuttle to Kensington Olympia is a daily affair. The Aldwych shuttle on the Piccadilly has not run since 1994. etc, etc, etc

Yeah, granted, but my point is that the majority of that report has gone untouched for various reasons (including the downturn in ridership during the early 80's). I merely note the irony that despite the circumstances changing in the meantime, the schemes are still more or less the same as current ones; recycling of ideas and inability to get achieve much. Reading many of the paragraphs, the arguements given and the conclusions reached still make sense by and large. Of historical note is one paragraph (3.14) though which states "Additional sources of supply of staff shuold be investigated. Possibilities are the recruitment of women in some grades (modern equipment and techniques bring much railway work within the physical capabilities of women)..." I do appreciate some things change, Ruislip
