The C stock de-icing units are 5543-5553. 5554-5556 did have de-icing equipment, but it was removeed, but when was this? I am suprised that there are only 11 units of C stock that have de-icing equipment, out of 138 units. Are de-icing units put in any train, or do they make sure there is de-icing equipment on a train if it is running certain services (not just C stock, but other types as well)?

The C stock de-icing units are 5543-5553. 5554-5556 did have de-icing equipment, but it was removed, but when was this? Originally 14 trailers were fitted with de-icing equipment (6543-6556), but 6554-6556 were decommissioned prior to the C Stock refurbishment program during 1989. The requirement for de-icing is only on open stretches of line. The only stretch where C Stock is the sole traction is between Hammersmith-Paddington. All other stretches that are in the open are served by the District line de-icing workings. The only programmed C Stock de-icers are District train 161(SX) and 71(SO) as these are the first trains from Parson Green sidings. The Circle & Hammersmith have no programmed de-icing, so likely to be on line controllers instructions. The normal provision is for the first train over each individual line and connection to be programmed by WTT for a de-icing train and then laying at roughly 2-3 hour intervals while the risk of icing continues. During severe risk periods trains may continue to run through the night as required or on line controllers instructions.
