If 1.05 +0.76 = 2.01 4.70 +0.20 = 5.10
What is the result of 1.10 - 0.25 ?

But 1.05 + 0.76 isn't 2.01... - or are we talking base 1.8?

But 1.05 + 0.76 isn't 2.01... - or are we talking base 1.8? 1.05+0.76 = 2.01 is perfectly valid in one context.

I'm guessing this is something like program machine maths which is base 8? But then the second example wouldn't be possible?

If base 8 then 1.05 + 0.76 = 1.81 = 2.01 (base 8). Then 1.1 - 0.25 (base 8) = 0.90 - 0.25 (base 10) = 0.65. But then 4.90 + 0.20 = 5.10 + 0.20 = 5.30. ? EDIT: The above was written last night after about 8 hours of drinking, so may well be complete gibberish!

Hint: The fractional part may not nessacrily be base 10. Hint: Consider how the Quail flies......

Miles and chains (eightieths of a mile) - so answer is 65 chains (0.65 in the (sub-optimal) way it's written here).
(In base 8, 1.05+0.76 = 2.03)

I've just realised that afarlie has modified the first post, so actually what I said above does make sense - if the first decimal place of the fractional part is base 8 then 4.70 + 0.20 = 5.10 and so the result of 1.10 - 0.25 is 0.65.
And etr220's suggestion (which amounts to the same thing, but explained better!) does at least give it a railway context.
