Between East Finchley and Finchley Central, or to be more precise, between NP13 AND NQ280, there is a section of track which emits a bleeping noise when a train passes over it. What exactly is this noise? Some sort of train detecting system?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Can't say I've ever noticed this - is it in a specific direction? what time did you hear it? I'll keep an ear out. Is it the track that beeps or the train?

On the N/B, every train it happens, noise comes from the track.

If its quite loud it may be an on track warning system for anybody working near or on the line. NR use them on the mainline, particularly on higher speed lines to give more advance warning of trains approaching or where a clear sight of any pway lookouts would not be obtainable, eg. on tight corners. Just a guess... A way you could tell is if there are any pway staff around or if there have been any work in that area recently - one could have been left switched on.

explains why I didn't hear it southbound then... there are a lot of people working on or aboutthe track round there, so it could well be that. I'll try and listen tonight...

Its not loud at all, and has been there for quite a while. Its occurence is nothing to do with track gangs working in the area recently.
