Today on my way to Oxford Street, I noticed on the 'car' I was in, next to one of the circular announcement speakers, was a new one (similar style but more oblong and sticking out more so that the sound could be projected to the door areas as well). But it was only next door to one of the speakers. Lets just say today there was no escaping "Please remember to take all your litter with you"!
I don't know if this is something they're going to be doing on both the Victoria and Bakerloo Lines....but would definately benefit the latter.

I don't see the point of making modifications to the 1967TS, as they will be replaced in the next few years.

This has been done on the Baker. I was on a '72 stock yesterday, but the announcements were still very quiet!

Yup I must say wasn't a huge difference.
I suppose, Sstock5000, the new Vixxie trains won't be avalible until late 2009 which is a year and a half away (according to their most recent reply to me) and 1967s will still be used until 2012.

And many of them will then move to the Bakerloo line, so it makes sense to modify both 67s and 72s in the same way.

Late 2009? Weren't the first trains meant to enter service early 2009?

I'm afraid so; that was Metronet Customer Service's most recent reply a week ago - late 2009 is when they foresee the first units to arrive for passenger service.

Where did you hear that? I thought it was early 2009. Also, be more careful when typing usernames!

According to the papers from the TfL board meeting, the first new Victoria Line train will be tested in service in January 2009. Got this info from here.

Are you sure this was a speaker? It sounds more to me like the grill that covers the thermostat for the saloon heaters that was supplied when the stock was built. Having said that, the '67s no longer have any heaters fitted as they run in passenger service exclusively in (very hot) tunnels, but it may still be connected to the ceiling vent fans. I would be surprised if they were retro-fitting a new speaker system with much of the stock nearing the end of its life. If they were going to fit a new PA system to the cars that might be earmarked for the Lakerboo, I would think they would wait until the stock is "refreshed" prior to transfer. ttr

Yes looked exactly the same as the speaker but was oblong instead of round. I'm sure maxtube can varify it! I highly doubt it is to do with the grill heaters.
As for the 2009 stock release date, I really want them to come early 2009, but I'm afraid it is more likely that my metronet reply was more reliable than the other link posted. Who knows though.

Mr Thant's blog stating testing in passenger service in January 2009 is quoting directly from the TfL board papers for last month's meeting, so hopefully they know what they're talking about - or maybe Metronet haven't told them what they've told you!
Perhaps the Metronet late 2009 date refers to reliably regular service and/or entry into service of the first of the series production trains?
When the 1986 stock was 'tested in passenger service' on the Jubilee line its appearances were sporadic - they would regularly keep it on depot because of teething troubles, or carry out testing on the line but without passengers. Very frustrating when you were trying to get a ride on each of the different types!
I wouldn't be suprised if the new stock makes one or two outings in passenger service in Jan, then disappears from public view for a while, so that the headline target date of Jan 2009 passenger service is, at least nominally, met.

If the first 09TS in service is a pre-production train, wouldn't it be train 2, because the first one (the one on the underground at the moment) hasn't got a proper interior at one end (there is a video on YouTube that shows this).

Yes, I believe that is correct - ISTR that train 1 is to be used for technical testing and will go back to the factory for fitting out and technical reworking once the stock is in full production; and that train 2 will used to determine the final production spec based on experience with it in passenger service, it will also be retrofitted to the final spec when the stock is in full production.
I'm guessing that TfL expect Metronet to deliver train 2 in the next few months, if it's to be prepared for passenger service in Jan. We shall see!
I note that the DLR's new stock is not in service five months after first delivery, although the Vic will have the advantage of experience with train 1 and less need to worry about electrical interference with other railways.

I noticed this the other day, the announcements seemed much louder, so much so that they could be heard between stations.
The seats also seemed firmer, and the moquette appeared new, except it was the old style rather than the new version...
