During the fortnight in which the tennis tournament is played, are additional trains used above what is normally allocated?

Its not possible to run extra trains down the Wimbledon branch. As i understand it , we already operate at maximum capacity based on the signalling system on NR (i.e. 4 minute intervals).

I remember back in the 80's, they definitely used to advertise additional trains to Wimbledon during the tennis.

Yes but a reduced service was run during the 80's - the service is far more intense these days so the spare capacity is no longer there.

In 1991, the first time that play occurred on the middle Sunday, extra trains were run at short notice - by Network South East!
From what I remember they were scheduled to run every half-hour between Waterloo and Southfields (possibly Wimbledon) via Point Pleasant Junction. The service turned out a bit hit-and-miss on the day, but I did get on one of the trains from Southfields and took a photo.
This was a few years before LU gained control of the East Putney to Wimbledon section stations from BR, and I guess couldn't be repeated in such an ad-hoc way in the current set-up (quite apart from the more intensive service today that Colin mentions above).
