Was just going home from Turnham Green eastbound yesterday at about 5.45, when I noticed a C stock train pull up, going to Ealing Broadway. The Richmond branch at the time was suspended due to a signal failure, so things were obviously a bit messed up, so to speak. Unfortunately, I'd just got on the train as the C stock was pulling up, so didn't get a photo!
This leads me to several questions:
Is the C stock on western bits of the District Line a relatively common phenomenan these days? I notice the blind had 'Ealing Broadway' as one of it's destinations...
When a branch is suspended, on-the-hoof, such as the Richmond branch yesterday, what generally happens to the spare trains? Are they parked up somewhere, or do they tend to send as many as possible down the other branch? I'd imagine this would be a nightmare to try and get the trains back in the right position, etc.
With seeing the C stock, it reminded me, maybe from here, maybe from a DVD somewhere, that I've heard all stock can run on all lines (although not necessarily in passenger service), except for the Central Line trains, which have different parts or something? Is this still the case?

C stock can run in srrvice anywhere on the District, except east of Barking. The destination blind includes most District destinations, including Richmond, Olympia, Tower Hill.
Diversions of C stock happen relatively often during service disruption but it's not an everyday event.
It is certainly not true that all stock can run on all lines - surface stock (A, C, D) certainly cannot run in tube tunnels! A and D stock are also restricted from running on parts of the SSR due to gauging problems and platform lengths.
Although C stock could theoretically run on the Met main, there are no drivers trained to operate them on those routes in service.

There is a photo that I put in one of the UNDERGROUND issues that I edited with C Stock on a gauging run to Richmond at Turnham Green...this would have been therefore in the 1970s. There was also an A Stock in Barking Sidings in the same issue, for crew-training. Now I think of it, there was a photo also of C Stock at Olympia because of diversion of BR trains from Euston to Kensington (Olympia).
C Stock of course traditionally ran in pax service via the #-over south of Finchley Road to the WB Bakerloo, and thence all-stations to Neasden, late nights after the Bakerloo had finished and south from Neasden to the #-over loop just north of FC early mornings before the Bakerloo started.
I published photos of 1959 Stock at Amersham on brake-block testing. A Stock ran to Amersham and Chesham and of course Hounslow Central on the D Stock METROLINER tour..the latter now impossible because of the ban west of Northfields depot, the two replacement overbridges in central Hounslow having been built just to tube gauge.

Although C stock could theoretically run on the Met main, there are no drivers trained to operate them on those routes in service. C&H drivers used to run C stock up the Met and Jubilee from Finchley Road and stable in Neasden Depot overnight until around 1998. There used to be C stock specials for events at Wembley running between Aldgate/Moorgate and Wemley Park. I think solidbond has a photo on his site of one of these.

Where did this C stock come from? Spares in depots? Or was it borrowed from the Circle/H&C/Wimbleware rota?
