Maybe this should be in the 'Rants' section, but here goes .........
I took a Met train out of Neasden yard just before 05:00 this morning. In service at Wembley, five intermediate stations then 'all change' at Amersham. I'd seen no more than a dozen people getting on and off en-route yet upon walking through to change ends at AMS there were already discarded coffee cups, sandwich wrappers, newspapers, two empty cider cans (!!) and a banana skin on a seat.
Now, London Underground doesn't sell newspapers, magazines, cigarettes, alcohol, fresh fruit, not-so-fresh fruit, hamburgers, kebabs, fried chicken, pizzas or jaguars earlobes but people bring all this stuff on to the trains (apart from the imperialist Roman tit-bits of course) and we get left with the detritus. Even the Chesham shuttle was knee-deep in newspapers, drinks cans & cartons, chip wrappers, gnawed chicken bones, half eaten apples etc the other night and one is only on that for a few minutes.
The 'there's not enough litter bins' argument doesn't hold water because there are plenty out in the public street - it's just a case of grown adults being disciplined enough to take responsibility for their own rubbish. Unfortunately, the traveling public has taken to using Tube trains as dumping grounds and for that reason if no other, cleaners are now as much a part of the LUL scene as station staff, admin people and drivers and should be paid accordingly.
And one more thing - as I was getting off in the depot a few nights ago I met the cleaner who was detailed to go through the train. 'Sorry,' I said 'but somebody has thrown up back there.' The response was a smiling shrug of the shoulders and a 'no worries' attitude. I couldn't do their job for my money, let alone £5.50 per hour
There is of course, the argument that says 'the traveling public creates the mess so the traveling public should live with it.' Now, I'm not saying I go along with that necessarily ..........

Agree 100% with your comments.
That in this day and age, we are paying people slave wages, but are the 4th most successful economy in the World is disgusting.

A naïve comment I know, but I'm always constantly dismayed by the sheer lack of respect some people have - just a few examples being feet on seats (including children who do it and their parents say nothing), people leaving their chicken wings everywhere, Tox '08 tags (and all the people that big him up on Youtube), people that scream and shout on their phone (including a particularly lovely one the other day who was talking about somebody screwing someone else, screaming at about 100 decibels), etc, etc. I could easily go on, but can already feel myself getting hot under the collar at the lack of respect or awareness of others that people have. Certainly not just a London thing, but I've never seen any of this when going on the Metro systems in Paris/Rome/Madrid/Barcelona/Singapore/NYC.
I dunno, maybe coz I woz brung up proper...
I suppose when driving on Friday and Saturday nights you can hear all of the rowdy stuff going on and have to ignore most of it?
N.B. I've just remembered, when thinking about feet on seats, a District driver whom I've heard a few times, every few stops says through the PA system 'Remember ladies and gentlemen, seats are for sitting on, please take your feet off the seats.' Good on him!

Recently when changing ends at Tower Hill, in the rear car (now the front car) there were two kids sat on the facing seats, about 11-13 ish. Both with there feet on the opposite seat.. and there mother (I assume) was sat with them... I asked then to put there feet down as I went past and they did so quickly. Quite shocking the mother didn't feel it necessary to do so.
Sometimes I get so so worked up about, as mjw calls it (quite rightly) "the sheer lack of respect some people have" .. one Friday evening I was waiting at Acton to travel to ECT to pick up a train.. there were 3 or 4 Australian, smart/decent looking, people (about late 20's early 30's) on the platform. They were drinking beer from cans and laughing and joking. Then the train arrived and one of them threw his can down on the platform and he was standing right next to a litter bin! I got so cross, and tapped him on the back, and said "excuse me, can you not see the rubbish bin you were standing next to" ... he said "alright mate calm down, no need to get so dam passionate about it is there" ... then got in the train laughing and making rude comments with his friends!
I thought to myself, if I was in Australia I would be making an extra special effort to make sure my behaviour was on top form at all times, since I am a foreigner in someone else's country ! If one of the locals saw me behaving like a total yob, they would think "bloody English, look what hes doing throwing his rubbish down" , and that actually matters to me ! There is no way I would go to another country and show such a sheer disrespect for the local people who live there !
I feel that in London, in particular (and I am sure it is a similar case in other larger towns/cities in this country) there is no respect whatsoever. Local people who were born in a certain area and have lived there for, say the last 50 years, must get very upset to see what has happened. To see the countless yobs who disrespect everything that others stand for, by littering, graffiting, peeing/throwing up in the street... and so on! It is seriously not on and about time the authorities did something ! ... before it gets too late and London is seen as the city.. that is a rubbish dump itself !

I'd seen no more than a dozen people getting on and off en-route yet upon walking through to change ends at AMS there were already discarded coffee cups, sandwich wrappers, newspapers, two empty cider cans (!!) and a banana skin on a seat. You obviously missed the ASLEF bulletin which was emailed to all members on the mailing list. As I travel to and from home on the Met in uniform I do get the so called "scum" that put their feet on seats whilst I get on. It doesn't bother them and clearly you have to feel sorry for the little cherubs because they obviously cannot read, bless em. There is no attempt at all to acknowledge a member of staff sitting next to a sign which states, "no feet on seats", and they just carry on as if they are doing nothing wrong. The other thing is people walking through the cars using the communications doors, but that's another story. The junk that's left on a train when it stables is beyond belief, joe public would not believe it unless showed. The piles of takeaways, cans, bottles, sick and newspapers is cleaned up for the next day. The cleaners do an excellent job and occasionally during the day i've had a cleaning supervisor ask me if everything is fine and clean in my cab.

Occasionally - I will have a go at someone littering or putting feet on seats (though to be fair - a lot of folks do take their garbage home / to office etc with them - so its not all bad !)
i think weekends / Friday nights seem the worst for litter - not just take aways and beer cans etc - but newspaper inserts and supplements etc.`
The cleaners do a great and unappreciated job - !
if you wnat to see dirty trains - have a look at the Waterloo and City on a weekday with millions of discarded Metro's etc

Don't get me started! I've just got home. There was an entire KFC takeaway on the seat facing me!
My good friend is in the BTP, I'd love to be in the BTP, the number of people that I could sort out would be massive!
I pi$$es me off, the number of people that take (a?) the pi$$ on the trains! They need a damn good hiding!

Well, to quote the song, "The floors are sticky, and the seats are damp"...

Occasionally - I will have a go at someone littering or putting feet on seats Have a go on Miseryrail, Merseyrail and you'll find that nobody puts their feet on the seats. Why? They've hired rent-a-thug to patrol the trains and will prosecute persistent offenders. It works. The 'pool also has Metro News to cope with on a daily basis, but you try finding one on a train beyond lunchtime. Now true, LU is a bit bigger, but I'm sure a little bit could be done.

I like the sound of that! Too many people smoke on the trains too. If you're caught there should be on the spot fines! None of this put it out rubbish-fined simple as!

I too am in total agreement with Merseyrail. I'm sick of 'customers' putting their feet on seats. It should carry an on the spot fine of £100, no arguements - pay up in 30 days or it doubles.

Trouble is a dirty train only attracts more litter, people will think "oh it won't matter, there's plenty of junk on the floor anyway".
I have actually been told to drop litter by railway staff before, upon asking where the bins are, being told there are none and that I ought to just drop it instead.

I've done that myself. For short periods it actually isn't uncomfortable.

Here is my beef about a trip to Atlanta this past weekend, where my wife and I rode on MARTA:
We decided to take public transportation to the baseball game, since it would be much easier than parking our SUV and walking who-knows how long and waiting in so much traffic before and after the game. At the station we started at, I took some pictures of the outside of the station, along with the ticketing machines; but a member of their police force told me not to take pictures, even though there was nothing posted outside the station. At the second stop along the way, a young man got on with some take-away from McDonalds who ate it on the train. I am mad because probably nobody at his station told him not to take food on the train.

As for 'da gay' cleaners .. what do you base that comment on? Even if they are gay, does that affect there ability to do there job ?
