I was on the West London line for a business meeting in Wandsworth today and I was noticing a few strange things on the line. The pan down change takes up a lot of time, shame the 3rd rail can't go to Willesden! Also, there is quite a tight layout into Clapham Jn. The single track and platform is poor in my view-could the second line be relaid-especially when Southern trains are curtailed at Clapham in Dec?
Otherwise-a nice little line!

Pan down should only take about 30 seconds - how long *did* it take?

Trains on the WLL have an enormous amount of pathing time which probably corresponds to the long stop. You can see at Drayton Park that switching modes is normally trivial.
The curve into Clapham Junction will be redoubled as part of the NLL upgrade, which includes four trains an hour. I think Southern trains are going to go on the slow lines to East Croydon rather than be permanently curtailed at CJ, but even when terminating there they'll probably still use platforms 16/17.

If Wood Lane ever opens then some of the pathing time would would be used up, but then when you build a station it would pay to build a platform that the HMRI would allow you to stop at! Also Imperial Wharf is yet to be built now that it is finally approved and money has been found. We shall see what happens here but whilst they terminate at Clpaham Jcn the at least have platform 16 & 17

The Willesden to Clapham Junction service is allotted between 17 and 21 minutes. This is ample time for the service. The pan up/down as has been said should only take about 30 seconds, unless it is a unit that has a slow pan up. The reason for the pan up/ down being located in its current postion was mostly for the now defunt Eurostar stock workings and that new third rail equipment to be put in in areas where it is not normally would require lots of different parties including our friends from the H&S.
As has been mentioned by cetacean there are major plans for the Latchmere Junction area, for a start the junction is to be reconfigured and the single line spur from Latchmere to Clapham Junction is to double tracked so that there would be no waiting to get a platform. Should also reduce the need to use the poorly designed platform 17. There is also talk of platfrom 1 at Clapham Junction being brought into use.

The great think about Drayton Park (bar Arsenal's stadium next door!) is that trains make a stop there (like Farringdon), so no time is lost! I would like to see Clapham Jn platform 1 returned to service! I hate seeing wasted resources!

It was also mentioned that NR might extend the overheads to Shepherds Bush station so the pans could be raised and lowered in the platform to save time..

In reply to Metman and Dazza,
I wish Drayton Park was open all the time, even if only for London's finest football team, that ply their trade at Ashburton Grove....... ;D ;D
It is highly unlikely of the wires being extended to Shepherds Bush, mostly due to the cost of either lowereing the track or raising the Hammersmith and City line bridge that crosses the WLL. The current clearence is not sufficent to put wires under that bridge. If you remember we use to lose the pans at that particular bridge, before we had the ADD fitted.

whats the platform like at Clapham Jn for Overground do you need to do the leap between the train and Platform liek you do if you go on the southern Service from Watford Jn - Clapham Jn. because the grap seem to be really hard to step across when your half sleep

The 508 are ok but a bit slow on pulling away from the stations.. The 313's are ok providing that al the bits are working properly.. There getting the the stage of giving up.. Roll on the 378's..... ;D ;D
