Hey guys, The Central Line was suspended today between Liverpool Street and Bethnal Green due to engineering work taking place. But what I do not understand is why almost all of the trains that terminated at Liverpool Street were continuinng to Bethnal Green. Why is this? Liverpool Street has two sidings and a crossover. So why do the trains continue to Bethnal Green? Also, how come they cant take passeners to Bethanal Green? Is this similar to why train would rather terminate at Willesden Junction than Stonebridge Park on the Bakerloo? Because there are more connections and staff at Willesden, which is the same thing at Liverpool Thanks Uzair

Don't take this as a definitive answer, but the sidings at Liverpool Street might not be able to reverse all the incoming traffic from the West and keep a sensible service density feeding back out. Even though trains have to reverse over a single crossover at Bethnal Green; the distance btween Liverpool Street and Bethnal Green can take (I guess) 2 trains that wouldn't fit into the sidings at Liverpool Street as they were already full of trains.
None of this might have happened in reality, but the pattern of sharing the reversers between Bethnal Green and Liverpool Street enables the timetable to become 'more robust' [and has happened before - I'm sure I've got a TTN (Timetable Notice) for this sort of work] - less prone to delays.

They can reverse there - perhaps to even out the service headways? Perhaps the platforms were being refurbished / station passageways had a lot of equipment in them, rendering them unuseable etc? The Northern ran OOS between Burnt Oak - Edgware and reversed there the other weekend, when there was platform refurbishment at Edgware, so it can be done.

Hands up all those poor sods that wanted to get to Stratford in years gone by when working in Town, and were faced with the Marble Arch-Liverpool St 'shorts'! During workdays I thought that it was a pain and yet in reality it was a benefit especially in tourist season.
Wood Green-Barons Court 'shorts' , now lonnnnng gone were annoying when trying to get to Hounslow.

I believe that one in three of the trains continues to Bethnal Green. Using the crossover at Liverpool Street would hold up the train behind, so it won't be used unless there is a problem in the sidings.
I do not know why the trains do not run in passenger service to Bethnal Green.
As for the Bakerloo, the trains used to detrain at Willesden Junction and run empty to Stonebridge Park because the facilities at the latter were inadequate for LUL staff to be based there all day. Now the station is under LU control, trains once again terminate there.
