Hi, can someone please answer this question. Many people are talking about it although I really want to find out what it is. Thanks Uzair, 12

Connect is LU's new radio/comms system. It's a private digital network and a vast improvement over our thirty year old conventional system. It has loads of opportunities for all sorts of things - text messaging, closed conversations - stacks of stuff. Hope that helps

It's the "new" LU radio system using a similar system to the Emergency services. It is a digital radio system which should be better than the current, archaic system.
It started as a PFI in 1996 (?) and only started to rolled out last year! It still hasn't been fully implemented yet.

Actually it was first rolled out in 2006, rather than last year, firstly on the East London Line (RIP) followed by the District LIne in October 2006.

Started out as "Connect 2000", for some reason the last bit was later dropped....

The central line has refused it at the moment as Connect 2000 isn't as good as their current system, nor is Connect 2000 a Cab Secure System! So they would be going backwards! This apparently is the nxt upgrade Connect/2020

Sorry to correct you, but I'm reliably informed that this will be the 2015 Connect model - an interim before the 2020 one can be installed safely:

How do you add a photo like the user above has done so cleverly? {Note to self: get something right next time you try a joke } Click on the insert image tag, which is to the left of the insert email tag. or type then insert the link in the middle [/img ]without spaces.

On the screen where you create a post, there's a button (as shown in the image below, by the red circle) which creates the following code: [im g][/i mg] As per this image: You then add the url of your image between the two 'img' blocks and hey presto! your image is shown within your post. Please be aware of the forum limits though! (they can be found by clicking here).

When would the Northern Line get Connect?

When would the Northern Line get Connect? I thought the Northern Line was going to get connect as of around September this year! I could be wrong (sorry tfc if I wasn't paying attention!!)... It does seem a bit stupid to go backwards from a secure to a non-secure system, but there we go. On the other hand I believe the Victoria Line can now use their connect units to get authority to pass signals at danger. Following correct procedures of course.

Can i also add connect has also made it possible for the police(met and btp) to piggy back off our system so they can use their radios below ground

I Work on the Northern Line (Stations) and returned to work yesterday after my long weekend to find that we had been changed over to Connect. When i was seeing out the last Southbound the Driver was suprised to see me with a connect radio set rather than a nokia he said he hadnt even been shown how to use connect yet

Bit of a retro-grade step for the Northern. Dumping it's nice cab secure radio for Connect. Well that'll get the SS's walking into the tunnels a bit more and perhaps increasing the delays.
From bitter experience one of the biggest problems with Connect is capacity.

What's cab secure radio? How does it differ from Connect? CSR is a function of a radio system which allows secure 2-way comms (ie, between a driver and a signaller), much the same way as a signal post telephone does. Network Rail utilise this function. It doesn't really differ from Connect as such. CSR is a function within a radio comms system, and Connect IS a radio comms system. I'm told that Connect has the ability for CSR. Once the roll out of Connect across the network is complete and any teething troubles have been addressed and rectified, I reckon CSR will be implemented.

Whilst I'm not entirely sure about the details of the train radios, the station radios can definitely be used for one to one calls already. During stock training we proved that you could use a handheld to call the cab of the train on a one-to-one basis, and the Line Controller can make private calls to cabs already on the Picc. I assume the hold-up is just that they have to prove to various people that it is safe, not to mention possibly having to train the drivers - a lot don't seem to know how to use most of the features of Connect, despite the system having been live on the Picc since last autumn, I think. The capability seems to be there in some shape or form already.

Connect does have the facility for cab secure radio, BUT doesn't at the moment. Given the current problems and issues with Connect it may be many moons before Connect is cab secure.
It will come as a big shock for the Central Line controllers. Certain procedures carried out fairly easily by controllers using the cab secure radio will now be needed to be conducted manually, often by a station supervisor walking to a train.
Speaking to one of the senior Connect guys - At present LU are only using Connect to 15% of it's capabilities.

That's because the training was done on laptops and when the real thing came along, it worked differently to how the training implied it would ::) ::) ::).........

That's because the training was done on laptops and when the real thing came along, it worked differently to how the training implied it would ::) ::) ::)......... Several of them claim not to have had any at all. Station side, I was given two bouts of it - once without a handset available, one with. The second was in fact rather pointless since it covered everything the first had covered only a couple of weeks prior, and I have a fairly good memory for that sort of thing.. and I was spare doing sunlight at Oakwood so I'd had plenty of time to read the little leaflet given out so I was finishing the trainer's sentences. A lot of other station-side had less, if any, training, though - being reserve worked in my favour, so to speak, because I was available so often. Once it went live on stations I was quite often showing features to other members of staff, including supervisors. (Of course, I'm not discounting the possibility that some of them were lazy and didn't pay attention to the training...) Are we going off-topic? I'm not sure.
