For some reason NOC were telling everyone that the suspension was Whitechapel to Plaistow when in fact it was Bromley-by-Bow to Plaistow.
The replacement buses were going to Bromley-by-Bow - a fact which, strangely, NOC managed to report correctly despite their apparent believe that there were no trains to connect with there. Joined up communication!

Joined up communication! Well, that's the NOC for you! Now you know that most of their information is usually not totally correct! ;D ;D ;D Earlier on today a passenger on a train was asking why there was a delay, they looked quite shocked and worried when I said it was WWII bomb! Though I didn't tell some Germans the same reason! They were also slightly confused by some old fashioned signs - they said that they didn't want to break the rules! ;D ;D

On another forum it was mentioned that this evening trains were running from Fenchurch Street via Bow Junction and Gas Factory Junction (thence to Forest Gate Junction I suppose, then Barking) and Liverpool Street to Barking via Forest Gate Junction - Woodgrange Park Junction then Barking Station Junction - Barking. Trains non-stop West 'Am.

St. were running towards Shoebury' I wonder how often that line you mention is used Oracle?

Hi BM! www.psul4all.free-online.co.uk/ gives you the usual booked Barking-Liverpool Street runs (for route retention I gathered a while back) and this is of course my own take which is hopelesly outdated now: www.btinternet.com/~gmhistorian/psul.htmI have as you all know a soft spot for enigmas, and that means unusual track/cross-overs etc. I would dearly love to 'do' Bow Junction to Gas Factory Junction, having been past it on the DLR. It is used for diversions when the LTS is blocked for some reason, railtours and stock transfers. It has suddenly proven itself yet again! Regrettably there seems to be no booked passenger services though there may be ECS moves for route retention.

Joined up communication! That explains a lot. When I was waiting at Earls Court for a Wimbledon train, I thought I saw a train going the other way to Bromley-by-Bow. Also, the station announcer was giving details of the replacement bus service and telling customers to use local bus services between Whitechapel and Bromley-by-Bow.

With no prospect of getting the correct drivers on the correct trains to ensure they all stabled in the correct places, when through running was resumed it was done as a special service in overlapping sections ...
Upminster - Whitechapel Plaistow - Richmond Tower Hill - Ealing Bdy Edgware Road - Wimbledon Olympia - High Street
H & C trains remaining Hammersmith - Whitechapel.
This emminently sensible solution worked very much better than I would anticipate trying to return trains to timetable would have done. There remained gaps, but this worked much much better than my previous experience's of attempts to return to TT ! All credit to whomever decided to do this.
There were still isolated through trains, including a couple of H&C's out of Barking sidings, possibly to ensure last through trains were in position.
As per ADW's comments, the NOC announcements about no service Whitechapel - Plaistow was most misleading, both to staff and passengers !
The C2C were working Fenchurch St - Pitsea via Rainham every 30 mins (via the single track Gas Factory Junction) Liverpool St - Shoeburyness via Basildon every 15 mins and Upminster - Grays via Ockendon.
As for overnight stabling, there were 7 C stock in Barking sidings, which is less than normal. There were 33 D stock at Upminster which allowing for those being maintained is about normal. I gather the opportunity to do extra works on the stock not used today was made use of !

Deal with the District Line management - after the WCL - PLW suspension had been agreed and publicity gone out, various DR senior people decided to operate to B-by-B in addition. But a NOC/DR decision was made not to advertise the 'limited' service to B-by-B to avoid swamping that station with 1000+ passengers per teminating EB train. I could name names but guess the post would then be deleted...

With regard to the Gas factory Junction single track, it is used mon-fri for a single ECS move into Fenchurch Street prior to the evening peak.
All last trains on the District ran as booked last night.

Since the replacement Buses were operating from BBB not Whitechapel and no realistic onward travel options exist from Whitechapel, it is just as well DR management sent trains to BBB !! Incidentally, weren't all the Richmond trains running to BBB, which would be the same ones as would have run to Whitechapel, so the same level of service ? (At least thats what was occurring whilst I was watching trackernet) With all service suspensions I can see no justifications for not running trains as far as possible either side of a suspension.

True, there was no realistic means of travelling onward from Whitechapel - certainly not the "existing local buses" routinely trotted out as an alternative which in this case meant the 25 which is always crush-loaded with fare-fiddlers on a good day. I presume the intention was that people used other LU lines to reach Liverpool Street or Stratford thence by c2c or NatEx; or on the rail replacement bus from Stratford or Canning Town to Plaistow. Obviously the DR management wanted to run as much of the railway as possible, but clearly trying to detrain/reverse every EB train at B-b-B would have been "challenging" to say the least. The point is that it was agreed therefore that the service would reverse E-to-W at Whitechapel, as it had done during the initial suspension on Monday. Only after all the publicity, posters, messages had gone out was it decided to run a small number of trains through to B-b-B. This made sense operationally as the H&C were still using platform 1 at Whitechapel to reverse, so it reduced the number of District trains reversing in platform 2 and thus the potential for blocking back on the EB. But it was felt that to widely advertise the "limited service" of through trains would overload a) B-b-B station and b) the bus service. So it was a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't. Incidentally c2c didn't help with an ever changing range of services and London termini used nor when the TFL poster-plotter system crashed and prevented revised posters from going out (unbelievably there's no IT support for it out of office hours!). Maybe not LU's finest hour information-wise...

Even during WW2, it could take several days to remove a UXB. My great-aunt spoke of having to be away from her home in Highgate for almost a week whilst two bombs were dealt with. (That was from the night when a working bomb demolished Highgate Police Station, which was about 100 yards from her house.)
