On platform 1 (southbound), I noticed recently a little white lamp on a pole. I've seen that sort of light before as fixed red signals (ie anti-wrong way), but not with a white light.
It was just below the level of the bottom aspect of the signal and came on as the train pulled up to it and then went out again before the train pulled away.
Anyone know what it's for? I didn't think there was ATO on the northern

Tripcock testers are fairly easy to see, fortunately.

Oooh, I shall have to have a peer off the end of the platform to see what I can (safely) see You should see a greasy metal frame, about a car length from the station starter. On that frame is a greased metal ramp which is pushed down by a trains tripcock, this puts out the light confirming to the driver the tripcock is in position.

heh! Don't worry, I have lots of more likely ways to get killed, I'm not going to take any silly risks... Cunning plan, I'll get off at FC on the way home and have a look from platform 2.
Is there such a device about half-way along the platform at Farringdon? I'd always assumed they were the tripcock-operated things..

Platform 1 is the Mill Hill platform. Do you mean platform 1 as the shuttle comes in southbound or do you mean SB platform 3?

I've just extracted from the library two 'yellow perils': 37/1967 (Temporary Signal Box at Finchley Central) and 30/1981 (revisions to signalling at Farringdon and Kings Cross).
Unfortunately the Finchley diagram doesn't show a tripcock tester, nor can I find it in the diagrams stored on my mobile phone, though I've got a note elsewhere that it is indeed a white light shown to the T/Op and there's a buzzer that will warn the Station Supervisor if the train fails the test.
Nor does the Farringdon diagram show a tripcock tester, and I don't think there is one installed there. Could you be thinking of the trainstop for disc OH37 (which reads over the crossover) and is about 10metres nearer the points than the signal?

The line supplement records that there is a tripcock tester at Finchley Central but it is not marked on the scale plan. It is normal to show them on scale plans. There are no TTs at Faringdon and never were. They are located at Euston Sq and noted in the line supplement and on the scale plan.

The TTs at Finchley Central are fairly recent - i.e. within the last year or so.
My understanding is that they were required when the Mill Hill shuttle was restarted to ensure the Tripcock is tested on every trip, and there is a similar one at Mill Hill East to test the other end.
The only location with Tripcock testers in the Met City area is Barbican - these are temporary and are switched in only as required. Due to their temporary nature, they are not shown on the scale plan.
