Investigation into an incident at Bridge GE19 near London Liverpool Street station, 28 May 2008
The RAIB is carrying out an investigation into an incident affecting a newly installed bridge spanning the Great Eastern main line near London Liverpool Street on 28 May 2008.

Bridge GE19 forms part of Transport for London’s East London line extension project, and will carry a new section of railway across Network Rail’s infrastructure. The bridge was installed during the weekend 3-5 May 2008, and remained temporarily supported as part of the planned installation process. Part of this support subsequently failed, displacing objects from the partly-completed deck onto the track below. Some of these objects were struck by train 1K12, the 19:15 London Liverpool Street to Southend Victoria. All traffic was halted and the traction current was isolated as a precaution. Trains in the vicinity were evacuated by the emergency services. There were no reported injuries.

The focus of the RAIB investigation will be the steps that had been taken to protect the operational railway whilst the bridge was being temporarily supported and the identification of any safety lessons to be learnt from the management of the incident.
