Gosh I was gonna give up doing the quiz but perhaps I'll stick with it a bit longer as two others seem to agree with me! I dressed a 104 pair telephone cable into that troughing run the full length of the platform with my gang of wiremen and jointers about 20 years ago as LUL took over the stations and I haven't been near or by since that time! It doesn't appear to have changed much although the fibre optic splice box and remake frame wasn't there then! I will never forget being protected by a Network Rail contract PICOW who gave us the okay to start work and then told me that a Network Rail train was due within the hour but the actual time was unknown and this was at 0200 Friday night/ Saturday morning. You'd never have seen troughing lids lifted and replaced so fast and we finished the job with minutes to spare. I remember thinking at the time that it was one of the dodgiest jobs I'd been given in my then 11 year career with LUL.

+3, but being pedantic it's looking east on the westbound line (or up the down line if you prefer!)

Is that a real signal on the end of the platform?

I'm glad it's not me that thinks the same, because if it were a proper signal (as in R/D aspects) then there'd be some evidence of an ID plate on the bridge - I couldn't find it so I think it is a 'plant' - isn't it a tube style signal anyway?

If it's a plant, then the AWS magnet in the four-foot is a plant too right?

(my guess is) No, as it's a crocodile-less one it applies to the starter for the other direction. If it applied to the signal in view I think you'd also be able to see the triggering barbeque grid.

the fibre optic box is everywhere now as its a termination now for the connect project Yep but long before connect there was fibre optic in use. The carrier link between Earls Court and Acton Town telephone exchanges was switched to a fibre optic link circa 1974, it being the very first such link anywhere on LU and in those days the FO jointing technology was very crude with the butt splice made in a vee block and covered with a glass plate The actual joint was in a Raychem sleeve looking much the same as any other cable joint. The cable was just four fibres. Other circuits appeared later in fibre and using the modern splice box and remake frame from the late 1980s onward including such things as the London Hospital Ring on the Circle line and the NR 48 fibre cable linking all the main London stations via the Circle line. LU of course ran a data ring as well which i believe has spare capacity rented to banks and other organisations in the city and of course the Central line and JLE made extensive use of FO systems.
