According to the Latest LO TT Booklet, it says:
I'm thinking what is this engineering work is actually for... -Is it preparation for the 378s? -Improving the power supply on the 3rd rail for the power hungry 378s?
Thanks.

The work is for widening the Hampstead Heath tunnel for Channel Tunnel freight trains from August to November on the North London Line. Other work taking place is the complete renewal of the junction at Gospel Oak. More details on the londonconnections.blogspot

The work is for widening the Hampstead Heath tunnel for Channel Tunnel freight trains from August to November on the North London Line. Other work taking place is the complete renewal of the junction at Gospel Oak. More details on the londonconnections.blogspot A number of years ago when the line was closed for a full year and a little bit more. The track within Hampstead Heath tunnel was lowered to accommodate OHLE. This was to allow Eurostars to run from the East Coast to Continental destinations, which they never did, but allowed them run them to Kings Cross when GNER hired three. But in the true spirit of joined up thinking, no thought was given to the ever increasing container height. The work as completed allowed up to 8ft 6in high containers on standard wagons, and then the container industry went to 9ft, 9ft 6in and finally 10ft high containers. The work proposed from 1st Sep for hopefully 8 - 10 weeks will see the track lowered with slab track installed to allow up to 9ft 6in on standard height wagons and also 10ft high on low height wagons. The 3 tph LOR Watford service will be diverted to Stratford via Primrose Hill during this period with an irregular service from Gospel Oak to Stratford and two shuttles from Willesden to Clapham and Richmond. No doubt the usual bus replacement will be on hand between Gospel Oak and Willesden. If you want to goto Euston though then get a Bakerloo!

Brilliant, just fab. If the rail-replacement service last weekend was anything to go by, we are in for a dreadful dreadful time! They laid on single-deck busses (30 passengers vs. 200-somthing capacity on the trains) less than two-per hour. The driver I went with wasn't route trained and did a complete loop of gospel oak - kentish town - chalk farm - camden road - kentish town - gospel oak. Never made it out of Camden!!! (This took 30 minutes btw!!)
Please bring back Silverlink! They may have been dirty and lacking investment but at least they didn't treat us like fools (much) Boris should have a serious look at LORL imho, they just arn't delivering. A slap of paint and oyster support isn't cutting it. Watford DC - still 3tph!! Sorry, I thought this was the 21st century and a modern, thriving city where transport is available on a whim.... (...Sorry for the rant)

On the bright side we now have Stratford - Watford through trains! How about keeping them?

Watford DC - still 3tph!! London Overground won't ncrease the frequency, so TfL can say that the service will be 'better' when the Bakerloo takes the line over. The service would be more frequent, with longer trains, but 72TS (or whatever will replace them) aren't as comfortable as the 313s and 508s, and they aren't that comfortable when compared to the 321s, 350s and A stock! But the 378s won't have good seats either.

Many years ago back in BR days I was at a meeting where the managers of rival projects to run large containers, and I think Eurostars on a certain mainline, nearly came to blows. Because one of them was holding out on doing any work. In order to force the other to, do all the expensive track lowering work required at the cost of that mans project. So the hold out manager could come along behind, and achieve his project on the cheap by doing some minor track slues with a tamper.

On the bright side we now have Stratford - Watford through trains! How about keeping them? But then thats what TfL want to do but only between Queens Park and Stratford, not even to the bay at Willesden. Not much forward planning here, but with the present capacity of the DC lines and the 3tph LOR and 9tph B'loo service the line is pretty much at full stretch. That being the reason behind the Watford service being diverted to Stratford for the duration of the works, rather than squeeze in the extra trains. So some one will have to stump up some money at some point and resignal the whole line to improve capacity, extend the B'loo to Watford and run the 4tph Queens Park - Stratford.

When was the last time a Tory did something beneficial for public transport? William Huskisson (1770-1830)?
