"A proposal has been made to change the name of a revamped station due to open in the East End in two years time. Shoreditch High Street station will open as part of the East London Line. Tower Hamlets councillor Abdal Ullah said the new station should be called "Banglatown" to reflect the strong Bangladeshi community. " Full story at: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7411512.stm

Shoreditch - I used to live there when I was young, It was called Shoreditch then, and the station should reflect that name. In any case, Shoreditch High Street station is hardly in the middle of the area in which the large Bangladeshi community live, unlike the old Shoreditch station.

It was home to immigrant Huguenots for a lot longer that it has been to the Asian community.
Hence, I propose "Huguentown" as a station name.

Bet you anything that far right political groups of the area will sieze this as something to protest about. The whole issue will get blown out of all proportion, Gallaway will say something annoying, Boris will put his foot in it somehow, etc etc. True, a rose by anyother name would smell just as sweet (that area is NOT a rose just to clarify! ), but why bother renaming it to something that'll kick up a stink when the station has a name thats far more appropriate? Disgraceful. Why don't people think of the full ramifications of somthign before speaking?

Disgraceful. Why don't people think of the full ramifications of somthign before speaking? Some people like the sound of their own voice a little too much.

They should just make sure that station names aren't confusing. A DLR Stratford International branch station will be called Abbey Road. Is that just to make tourists go to the wrong place?

It should be called Shoreditch-plain and simple! Agreed - the new Shoreditch High Street station is closer to Shoreditch than the old Shoreditch station was!

It's proposed new name might open up an avenue for racism... just leave it as it is!

It's proposed new name might open up an avenue for racism... just leave it as it is! How about Black-Shirt Avenue or Mosely Mansions?

Whilst we are on the subject of Shoreditch High Street Station I am very surprised that it is to be in Zone 2 going back to the days when the buses had Zonal fares SHS would have been classed as Zone 1, and given it's close proximity to the City a lot of people traveling in from Zone 2,3 or 4 maybe even 5 or 6 at the eastern end of the District line will be able to Change at Whitechapel for the Line and Exit at SHS and avoid paying for Zone 1. Do we think that Shoredith High Street may change to a Zone 1 Station in the near future or will TFL leave it as it is to encourage rail travel?

A few years' ago they wanted Aldgate East renamed Brick Lane. Quite why some people think this area should have special treatment is beyond me. We can all think of "humourous" (or not) new names for Golders Green, East Ham, Brixton, Notting Hill but most of the local inhabitants would be likely to find them highly patronising if not insulting.

Brick Lane is no worse in terms of geography than the misnaming of Aldgate East - it's on Whitechapel High St, while Whitechapel station itself is on Whitechapel Road - all of which is the same road from Aldgate through Mile End, Stepney, Bow where it crosses the A12 link down to the Blackwall tunnel at the flyover! Besides, Brick Lane has at least some outside relevance for the market. Banglatown... not so helpful. Chinatown doesn't get the same treatment, either.

There's no stop called "Little Venice", either, a "For Little Venice" is appended to the sign in the station. Do something similar..."Shoreditch, For Banglatown." There, geographical location named, something is pointed out (if they do develop the Banglatown in a way similar to Chinatown)....there. As for the sign in the article...East London WAS an Underground line when it closed, and how much do you want to bet that many people still assume that it will open as such?
I wonder...what were reactions around the time of the "other" ex-LU line? I mean...when the Moorgate line was converted from LU to BR?
