Today marks the anniversary of one of the worst disasters in footballing memory. Lincoln City travelled to Bradford City for an end of season game. Bradford had been promoted. Lincoln had nothing to play for. It should have been a party.
A few minutes before half time, smoke was seen coming from The Main Stand, and within two minutes the smoke had turned into a blaze. Within another three minutes the blaze was an inferno. In the resulting panic to escape, people clambered over bench seats from the back of the stand in a bid to make the safety of the pitch. 56 failed.
Wherever you are, whatever you are doing today, please spare a moment to think about those who lost their lives. Lincoln and Bradford unite on days like today, there will be services held, and officials from both Cities will meet to lay flowers.
Lincoln City had two supporters die in the fire, and the new stand built behind the goal at The Railway End (The Clan) as a result of the fire was named in their honour.
With my special thanks to my friend Helen who sat up into the small hours creating this for me.RIP The 56. You'll Never Walk Alone.

I remember watching it on TV. My thoughts go out to the families of those who lost their lives.

We used to have to watch the footage of that fire in LUL fire training (when they did it properly). Very frightening how quickly it spread. As a football fan myself, that kind of thing doesn't bear thinking about. My cap is removed in respect for the dead.
