This is a historical question, based upon info I have gleaned from my ever-growing Underground Guide and related timetable collection. In the 60s and 70s there were 2tph on this branch; one of them was a fast train and the other an all-stations train apparently "borrowed" from the Watford branch, as it had 3 tph instead of 4 on Sundays. When did this set-up end? I can understand that with BR services only operating between Amersham and Aylesbury on Sundays, the Met had to fill the gap.

February 1970 - WTT 233
Amersham ‘fast’ service reduced from 30 to 60-minute intervals with 30-minute Amersham service being maintained by diverting one all-stations Watford train at Moor Park to Amersham. Watford service thus 3 trains per hour at intervals 15/15/30.
December 1982 - WTT 281
Service reductions on almost all lines. Sunday service 10/20 pattern all-day on the Met, but 1 tph all-stations Watford train diverted to Amersham, giving Amersham a 30-minute service (one fast one all stations), but Watford only 2 tph (at 20/40-minute intervals).

More recently, Amersham trains ran 2tph fast to Baker Street, with Watford having 3tph all stations to Baker Street. Mrfs can answer this I expect.....

Today's passengers would go nuts!

But back then there weren't many passengers (or staff!) to make running those services worth it. It's a good thing that now there are more services and with the S-stock there will be even more trains.

The easiest way is for me to present the major changes in the service intervals, all are for Sundays
WTT 247 May 1975 LMR 60A Ammy Fast 60 Slow 60 Cm 30 Wf Fast Null Slow 15B Ux Fast Null Slow 15
A No LMR below Am, figure refers to Ay - Am. B One tph to Am instead of Wf.
WTT 266 January 1977 (17 train service) LMR 60/120A Ammy Fast 60 Slow 60 Cm 30 Wf Fast Null Slow 15B Ux Fast Null Slow 15
A as WTT 247, but LMR service 1033½ - 2345 Am - Ay. B as WTT 247
WTT 281 December 1982 LMR 60 (Am-Ay) Ammy Fast 60 Semi Null Slow 60 Cm 30 Wf Fast Null Slow 20(d) Local (H - WmPk) 10 City Null
[edit]: (d) includes semi-fast or slow Amershams. [end]
WTT 293 14/5/90 WR 60 (b) Am Fast 30 Semi Null Cm 30 Wf Fast null Slow 20 Local 10 City 5- 10 (g)
(b) a long footnote that I can't be faffed to type as it's all to do with Christmas malarkey. (g) included 20 min Ux service and 30 min Am service
WTT 303 2/6/96 Chiltern 60 Am Fast 30 Semi Null Cm 30 Wf Fast Null Slow15 Ux Fast Null Slow 15 Local (H - BkS) 7-8 Fast (H - BkS) 30 City 5-15 (f) BkS - Ald (g) 2-5
(f) 3 tph Ux 2tph Wf (g) inc Circle and Hammersmith
Do you want the information of more recent times - (haven't got the energy to lug the 25 A4 Met WTTs down from the high Met. and District shelf atm ;D).

February 1970 - WTT 233 Amersham ‘fast’ service reduced from 30 to 60-minute intervals with 30-minute Amersham service being maintained by diverting one all-stations Watford train at Moor Park to Amersham. Watford service thus 3 trains per hour at intervals 15/15/30. From my Autumn 1964 Underground Guide, the fast "Ammies" had 1tph instead of 2tph. I guess sometime between 1964 and 1970 the frequency was increased back to 2tph. I should be getting an Autumn 1968 Underground Guide from the UK in another day or two to confirm this.

My Winter 1961 Underground Guide has 2tph, fast, weekdays off-peak on the Amersham branch. It also has 2 fast tph's on Sundays, with 4tph all-stations ex-Watford. However, my Autumn 1968 Guide still shows 1 tph ex-Amersham off-peak weekdays (fast); with the 2 fast tph's on Sundays on this branch. So my guess is that the Amersham service was altered sometime closely after 1961. I am going to hypothesize, on the other hand, that the 2 tph's ex-Amersham on Sundays, with one fast and the other all-stations "borrowed" from the Watford line began in or around 1970.
