A few posts on Annie Mole's blog discusses how the chocolate machines, long incapable of ripping off charging customers properly for their contents, have been steadily deactivated ( THIS THREAD mentions it too), are now disappearing altogether! Likewise, photo booths and the grey drink machines are also vanishing from LU property. The posts on the blog attribute this to Kenny L's desire to declutter stations to make more room for adverts to decrease overcrowding - does anyone know what the deal is?

Well despite being staff [apologies if that sounds arrogant] I dont know the real reason. There are various theories, one is indeed, reducing platform clutter. Another is Cadbury has lost the contract, and the third is smoke came out of one, a while back. So they are seen as a fire hazard. I have been ripped off once or twice, but the last time I used one, I got seven bars of chocolate for £1.

I think Cadbury's may have lost the contract, as they seem to have turned all the posters with the options on inside out, on the machines I've seen recently, that are still on the platforms but not operational. That could suggest TfL don't want to advertise Cadbury's any more, or vice versa. But I can't believe TfL are just going to remove them. They must bring in a decent bit of money!? The man in the know would probably be prjb, who hasn't been around recently, but seems to pop up whenever his name is mentioned. ;D

As I understand it, the original problem was when one of the chocolate machines issed smoke free of charge. LU decided they weren't safe so they isolated all of them electrically. The cost of rebuilding them to new standards was too high and the costs of servicing them and refilling them was never making them money anyway. I don't think we'll see them again.

My understanding is that the situation was a little more serious than that and has occurred following audits in which it has been established that standards were ignored when the machines were originally installed by LUL. It seems that decluttering is not only about tidying up platforms but also about tidying up the domestic supply wiring at stations. Brian

Must agree with LTB (not the arrogant part ) . The reasons were never advertised outside the "powers that be". The "pointers" appear to be : A decision was made to re-introduce "style and design" back into LU, to regain that heritage. Stations had been plastered with signs, notices and often they were not introduced with design in mind. So a fresh look was introduced with alot of signs, notices removed to de-clutter the stations. I doubt a choccy bar machine would cause much overcrowding. No idea about wiring etc, but wouldn't be surprised if this was the case, although you'd assume that was now an INFRACO problem. The only official reason I've ever found was that LU looked into all their "non-core" activites on stations i.e. photo booths, telephones, cash machines etc. Cash machines & public phones were viewed as desirable from a public point of view PLUS cash points make loads of ££££ for LU. The removal of photocards for 99.9% of tranasctions removed the need for photo-booths.

I already miss knowing how to brake at Waterloo.
Enter the platform at 25 and hit rheo 1 at the choccy machine. Gently trundle round the loooooong curved platform to the end.

Are the cash machines on LU stations generally free, or charging?

All the LU cash machines I have seen are just ordinary High Street bank ones, and do not charge for use.
