It has been mentioned before that the Oyster system recognises certain interchanges where you have to touch out at one location, and touch in at another. For example,
Tower Hill - Fenchurch Street.
Heron Quays (DLR) - Canary Wharf.
Hammersmith (H&C) - Hammermsith (DIstrict and Picc).
It is the latter which caused me to be charged two maximum cash fares! The Oyster system is trying to be helpful in classing it as an interchange, but in the end did the opposite.
I travelled from Ladbroke Grove to Hammersmith (H&C), touching in and out as normal. At Hammersmith, I had the intention of meeting a friend for coffee, and duly spent around 25 minutes doing so.
After this, I travelled from Hammersmith (District and Picc) to Uxbridge, touching in and out as normal. Upon arrival at Uxbridge, I discovered that I had been charged two maximum cash fares. It turns out that the system decided that I had made only one journey (Ladbroke Grove to Uxrbridge), and classed my time at Hammersmith as intercnange. Due to the time I spent at Hammersmith, and the fact that the Uxbridge branch had severe delays, this cummulative journey had taken over 2 hours, hence the maximum cssh fare.
TFL will refund me of course, but surely 25 minutes at a station between touching out and back in again cannot be classed as reasonable interchange time? I was making two separate journeys in all essence, but how the system can be made to realise this is anybody's guess. I have written to TFL to tell them about this system "loophole".
