I don't expect any points for guessing that came from the Sub Standard forums. I used to post there but gave up due to the anti LU staff aggression.

He can't exactly complain about the service if he doesn't pay for it...

He can't exactly complain about the service if he doesn't pay for it... What the Freedom pass? I suspect he DOES indeed pay for it via his council tax. Anyway I'd presume she was prosecuted for fare evasion so would've been proved "beyond all reasonable doubt". IF she had maintained that it was a mistake then the case would've been thrown out. Therefore she must have said something/ admitted to something and this was presented to the court. Having recently witnessed a revenue undercover operation - the questions they ask are very clever.

I could elaborate on my views the whole ENCC scheme, but since the Government seems hell-bent on expanding free travel for some and forcing prices up for those who do pay, there's probably not much point.
I do agree, however, that the court would have had proof b.a.r.d. as you say. If she was caught by a gripper, and realised the mistake, surely you would be horribly apologetic and embarrassed, and pay the correct fare on the spot? Even if it was within a PF area and you had to pay a tenner on top, far less than £250 + a conviction.

TC, I don't share your views regarding free travel for the those over 60.
The vast majority of those have paid considerable amounts of taxes over their working lives.
Pensioners also don't have a huge income.
The real problem is in the typical way the govt do things - they haven't fully funded their promises, leaving many bus companies only receiving 60/70p in the £.

The vast majority of those have paid considerable amounts of taxes over their working lives. Mind you, some of them do get a ridiculous sense of entitlement over it - I had one yesterday having a go at me because it was 8:15, and he couldn't use his Freedom Pass yet, ranting that he'd paid taxes for 27 years and had worked for LU for a few years back in the sixties. I refrained from pointing out that by the time *I* got to retire I would have been paying taxes for almost 50 years, working for LU (with any luck) for around 40 years... and that's taking the optimistic view that the retirement age won't increase!
